Hello everybody, I have a 2006 grand Cherokee overland, 5.7 hemi. A few months after I bought it, I started noticing funny quirks from time to time. Now, a couple years later, I'm thinking I have some computer problems but not too sure where to look.

Problem now: I have a TCM low input signal code. The jeep is acting fine at this point. It started dying on me last week, would run fine for 3 seconds then shut down. Battery was low so I replaced it, but still intermittently died on me. Cleaned the mass air flow sensor and that problem went away.

In the past:
So a common problem I've had is the trans temp light goes on randomly, and kicks the fans up. Usually it's after driving a bit. A few months after I bought it this started happening. I did find some trans cooler lines were seeping so I ended up hacking those off and putting hoses in their place. Fluid is fine now, but still have the trans temp issue. It doesn't happen much in winter, and since it happens after driving, I assumed my trans was overheating... but then it happened a few times when idling after starting a cold engine. Kept checking the fluid, no problems can be found, and it's been like that for 2 years now.

Other problems:
I've started getting service messages on the dash... service 4x4 system, and it won't shift into 4 wheel low because of that (quadra drive trans.) Also, it only happened one time but it scared the daylights out of me, one time I started it, and when I threw it in drive it didn't shift. Then, when I shifted into park, it began grinding loudly. I shut it off, restarted fine, when I shifted this time it began grinding again. I shifted again and again, the grinding got quieter, i looked underneath and the sound was coming from the trans pan, so I cut it off asap. Waited a bit, checked fluids, started it up and drove away... that never happened again.

Im a pretty handy guy... but I don't know that much at all about transmissions. It seems to me it would be something with the TCM either getting or giving the wrong signals. What I don't know is, how can I figure it out and how do I fix it.

My plan:
I've been doing some reading... I'm going to clean (or replace) the shifter control module, and probably the ignition switch while I'm at it. I've also read that dirt and corrosion can build up in the TCM terminals and relays, so I'm going to pull/ clean all the fuses, relays, tcm and pcm terminals (there is a notable amount of corrosion on the fuses.) I'll have to learn how to test for a short at the TCM terminal.... I'm hoping by the time I get this far the problem will be gone, but I'm not that confident.

Anything else? I'm sure I'm missing some easy troubleshooting steps...I would really appreciate any advice, tips, thoughts, ideas, suggestions... any info would help me ALOT!! Thanks

Have you got a scanner that reads "Live" data? If you do, maybe monitor everything related to the transmission for a couple days.

I went after the connectors under the hood last week. I used a tiny dab of deoxit on each pin and a tiny bit of their grease afterwards. I found one of the PCM connectors has a chip out of it facing the firewall where I couldn't see it before. It looked like it might line up with the "O" ring. The lowest pin right by the crack looked dark, the rest bright gold. So I got that pin and the ones around it with the D series deoxit, plugged and unplugged a few times, let it dry and hit it with a tiny bit of blue deoxit (blue is for harsh conditions), then a bit of deoxit grease. I added quite a blob of (cheaper) permatex dielectric grease to the outside where the crack is. EGR error went away. I didn't do the fuses, but did get the large connector the they feed. All connectors looked very clean except the one with a crack. Deoxit is tops, but needs to be used properly and with some caution. Less is more, RTFM, etc. You can get a kit with D series, blue and yellow for gold plated and audio, plus a tiny tube of grease for about $20 or so... amazon or parts express. Made by caig, read up on their website because the kit does not come with a lot of instructions.

Cleaning the shifter control module is a great plan. Also consider replacing it if these problems persist after all this work. It is known for causing all kinds of strange drivetrain problems.

Your service 4wd is probably do to the N23 recall. Read up on it.

The code I'm getting now is po882. TCM low input signal. I haven't heard about the n23 recall before, I'll be reading up on that shortly. And no there are no electrical mods, i haven't even replaced the stereo (rear cd player won't play discs, front main stereo/ nav screen has been dead for a year. )

Did you ever find a fix for this? I am having the same issue.
