Transmision / clutch rattle???

1326 Views 15 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  B2CARPEN
I took my 2005 TJ to the dealership for diagnostics this past weekend because of a rattle that I had. They told me that they believe that it was comming from the transmission or the clutch. Everything seems to be shifting fine and the clutch is holding well. What could this be?

The wierd thing is that it doesn't do it in the morning, when its colder out, only in the afternoon when the temp is quite a bit higher.

Any ideas? Maybe low transmission fluid level?

any help is appreciated

What type of rattle and where?Did you check your own codes?Did it throw any?Could be a heat shield loose, bad cat,t case linkage,etc..
I actually haven't had a chance to check anything on it yet. The dealership said that it is probably something pretaining to the clutch or tranny. They said that everything seems fine though, the reason i am asking is that it is still under warranty if it is the tranny but obviously not the clutch, so i don't really want to pay for a tear down if everything is working fine now, minus the noise.

I don't have any lights or anything lit up in the dash or any other reason to worry, just the noise for now and it seems to be sparatic
i also asked them to check the cat but they said it is actually comming up from the shifter, and also no loose heat shields
I'd check the heat shields,t case linkage and anything else for looseness.
alright will do, think low tranny fluid would cause slight rattles?
It might be the notorious transfer case shifter rattle. Switch yourself to 2HI and lift up on your transfer case handle just enough so it's is tight and not bouncing around but not in 4HI position. If the rattle goes away or becomes not as bad then it's a good possibility you have a loose or worn out transfer case linkage components.

I hear that this is pretty common for jeeps. This is the cause of my rattle noise and unless I prop something under the transfer case handle to keep it in the "up" position while in 2HI, it sounds like something is bouncing around in a tin can.

I just ran out and checked it, there seems to be about a 1/2 inch of play before the pressure starts where you would pull to engage 4 HI.

so this seems like ti could be causing the rattle.
B2CARPEN, what bracket would I need, right now the jeep is stock but very shortly I plan on putting on a 1"
BL, 1" MML, and a 3.25" RC suspension lift. I would rather correct the problem then just brace something underneith the handle if at all possible

Having a little "play" while in 2HI is normal, but if the rattling goes away or becomes less noticable while holding it up in 2HI then you know it's your transfer case linkage. There are some aftermarket replacements you can buy or you can also relocate it from the body and place it on the transfer case with a kit.

Well... you can either replace the bushings or relocate it. I think reolcating it would be the better option since you plan on a BL. I don't know the "best" aftermarket adapters or parts but here's some as an example which you can find through Quadratec...

Skyjacker Suspension JSRB231A - Skyjacker Transfer Case Shifter Correction Bracket for 97-06 Jeep® Wrangler TJ & Unlimited with Automatic Transmission - Quadratec

Skyjacker Transfer Case Shifter Correction Bracket for 97-04 Jeep Wrangler TJ with AX5 & NV3550 Manual Transmissions - Quadratec

Advance Adapters 715542 - Advance Adapters Transfercase Shifter Bracket for 97-06 Jeep Wrangler TJ - Quadratec

Teraflex 4947100 - TeraFlex Transfer Case Shifter Linkage Adapter for 97-06 Jeep Wrangler TJ & Unlimited - Quadratec

Just be sure to find the correct kit for your TJ. I believe you have the same as me (NP 231). Also shop around and see if you can find it cheaper

That's funny... I'm doing the exact same mods. I already have my RC 3.25" kit ordered :cheers2:

Also, it wouldn't be a bad idea to change out the trans and transfer case fluid while you're at it...

Thank boogieman for this referrence... he passed it along to me a couple weeks ago. Very easy DIY job.
thank you everyone for all of the help, if taking up the slack removes the rattle then I will be looking for the bracket very shortly

expect the lift kit to ship and be delivered very fast, it seemed that I had mine in no time, now the only problem is going to be having nice weather for an entire weekend to get underneith it and get it installed

No Prob! I hope the relocation kit helps out your rattle issues. Let me know how it all works out since I might consider doing it as well (My kodiak tin isn't holding up like it use to )

Good luck with your kit! I'm installing mine Labor day weekend when I have some time. BTW - you are right about the shipping... I ordered it Sat and I should have it by this Wed
our 05 lj rattles in the tranny as well when the clutch
pedal is out and its in neutral. ive read on here that
its 100% normal. i had the fluid changed and it was
in good shape and at a good level.
