Tire/lift laws

I'll be moving to PA from CO in a few months and was wondering if there are any laws against how high a vehicle can be lifted, how far tires can stick out, etc. Thanks.

If you do some searches, you will find PA has pretty strict rules and is often aggressive in enforcing them.
depends on what type of inspection you require to be able to bring your jeep here, most places are lax on the rules, in fact many if not all vehicles would likely fail an inspection if the mechanic wanted to pick it apart, for example the size tire that is supposed to be in it which is posted on the doors has to match all the tires are the vehicle, the front and rear axles must have matching tires(meaning the front 2 match and the the back can be different tread of similar patterns) bull i know ive read the laws because i want to mod my jeep and not get in trouble, front axles must have swaybar links, shocks can not leak, all equipped lighting on the outside must work, brake lights, turn signals(most ignore fogs as many add what they want, battery must have a tie down that is part of the vehicle(not a bungy cord or ratchet strap) bunch of little stuff, look up a few shops and hope you don't move to allegany county where they have strict emissions testing or the th philly area.

I believe the widest tires can legally stick out is no more than 2 inches, and the bumper or lights(can't remember off the top of my head) cant be more than 52 inches from the ground(i want to say the bottom of the bumper though).
good luck look me up if your in western pa sometime

some of it depends on who you run into.
here in the Lehigh valley, I've nevar heard of anyone ever being pulled over for height...cops are pretty strict our tires sticking out past fender flares, though...
The fenders have to cover the width of the tread. The maximum bumper height (height of the lowest horizontal part of it) depends on the weight of the vehicle, up to 30 inches. As far as lights go it's always - if it's there it has to work. Fog/ driving lights have limitations and have to shut off when the high beams turn on... I believe you're allowed one pair, dot approved, and any additional need to be covered when on a public road. The headlights have to be properly aimed but I've never seen a shop bother to check them. Tires can be mismatched brand and tread but must be the same size across the axle and can't be mixed with bias ply and radial on the same axle. The shop is required to pull a tire off each axle and check brake lining thickness, rotor run-out, rotor thickness, etc. They're supposed to check wheel bearings, ball-joints, tie-rods, make a visual inspection of the emissions parts, check for exhaust and fluid leaks. There can't be any holes in the body (fumes), fuel lines aren't allowed in the passenger compartment. Sharp/ jagged edges on the body aren't allowed (like after a wreck that could cut someone). The exhaust has to exit to the outside of the body, no dumping underneath. No parts are allowed below the 'scrub line'. The seatbelts have to work too. There's more but that's a good start.

Hey everybody. I just stumbled across this thread as I have some similar questions. I'm moving from Florida (no vehicle inspections) to a new job in Philadelphia later this year. Because of the location of my office, I can easily choose between PA, NJ and Delaware as places to live. I'm worried about taxes of course, but also wondering where I'll catch the least amount of crap while getting my 2005 Rubicon Unlimited (4" lift, 33's etc) inspected and approved. It seems, so far, that each of these three states are equally strict. Is that true? My exhaust is custom due to the triangulated upper arms on my Clayton long arm kit. I don't have a tailpipe, just a muffler off of the cat and then it drops straight down. The muffler guy down here said that would be a big problem in PA. True??? Also, will they fail you for having a CEL on???
The exhaust pipe has to exit outside the body - not underneath, side or rear is ok. Philly is an emissions area, not sure about jersey or Delaware but I imagine any indication the engine isn't running right would be an issue for that.

Uh oh!
Just came back from the inspection station that I've been taking my Jeep to and other vehicles for years. He tells me he can't inspect it now because PA passed a new law 4-1-15. Any lifted vehicle has to have the title reconstructed and go through an enhanced inspection. He showed it to me on pendots site but he's on the phone with them now to get clarification. Has anyone else ran into this yet?

I'll call bs on that one. There's no way that would pass.

I hope your right but it's not looking good. I've been calling around to different garages today. I've ran into a couple that haven't heard of it and few that have. http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/pdotforms/inspections/Safety_Bulletin_BI15-1.pdf
Dang, I'm moving to the Philadelphia area for work later this year. It's bad enough that I'm coming from a state with no vehicle inspections, but this will be very difficult to adhere to with a lifted Wrangler and a lifted Tacoma. Looks like I'll be living in Delaware or New Jersey. Please keep us posted.
Ok, I found out more about this. The inspection mechanic was getting the run around from penndot for 2 days but he finally got a direct answer from one of them. They basically told him he can still inspect it the way it sits but it should have a modified title and with the modified title comes the requirement for an enhanced inspection and it's the owners responsibility. So if we get pulled over by a state trooper having a bad day they may give us a hard time or be able to fine us. I did some more research on their site and actually found this law was released in may of 2014 and what went out in april to inspection garages was more or less a reminder that they have to notify the owners of this. Here's the fact sheet that I found from 2014 detailing pretty much the same stuff as the one I linked above from April. http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/pdotforms/fact_sheets/Modified_Vehicle.pdf . Hope this helps and sorry for causing a scare but it sounds like just more gray area from penndot.
You bettet read that a little better,it has nothing to do with a lift.

"A vehicle of a type required to be registered under this title materially altered
by the
addition, deletion,
substitution or modification of the body, chassis or essential parts, new or used"

I would assume suspension would fall under chassis or essential parts part of that. Like I said, Penndot... a whole lot of gray area.
I wouldn't think this is what this law is intended for.
Just get an inspection and don't tell them it's lifted,if they question you just be adamant about it.
PA is a pain in the azz

The law doesn't seem to have anything to do with lifted vehicles and more todo with vehicles that would have a registration class change.(v8 swap into a 6cyl, gas to diesel, removing axles and repairing flood vehicles). Hopefully the GRAY area becomes clearer and shops don't go full retard. I've been looking into what I have todo to get my jeep to pass PA inspection since i'll be moving there in august. I've got a lot todo starting with flares
