The 1979 CJs most definitely came with the T18A, there is the window sticker from mine:I'm just wondering I thought I was told one time at in 79 jeep only put the t 18 transmissions in 150 cj5's I'm probably wrong can some one help me out with this I got a 79 with a 258 and a t 18 Trans. Thank you
Actually, I believe it was a 4.09 first gear. 2nd and 3rd gears were also numerically lower than T-18s with the granny low.I beg to differ. the T-18 that came in all the CJ series had like a 4.21 FIRST GEAR.
Best of all worlds.... !!The finished product: Jeep J-20 T-18 with Scout Dana 300 transfer case, a direct bolt on no adapter
The plug on top... just behind the 3 knobs/bumps. I have a switch screwed into that hole (single post) but no wire going to it so it's a mystery. A neutral or reverse sensor switch, maybe?T-18

From my research and what I've actually found, T-176's with 3.52 first gear were only used in 80 CJ's. 81 and later T-176's are actually T-177's (3.82 first gear). Makes sense because in 81 they went to higher rearend ratios (2.73, 3.31) so they lowered first gear. You're right John, Novak's web site and other places say T-177's were never used in CJ's (or words to that effect) but we know better. That reminds me when people say they never put a T-177 in a CJ only T-176 although a lot of people find then in their CJ's anyway.
I'm sure they put in whatever was available. Just like Dana 44's in '86 Jeeps.
The 77-79 CJ T18 did have the 6.32 first gear. I've owned several, one of which is currently in my 75 CJ5 (swapped from a 79). Any factory service manual for these years will also corroborate this as the equipment lists and gear ratios are shown in the manuals. oljeep.com has factory manuals in free downloads if anyone wants to look.T-18 in a cj 7
I beg to differ. the T-18 that came in all the CJ series had like a 4.21 FIRST GEAR. The T-18's that came in full size Jeep trucks had the 6.32:1 granny low first gear. Parts Mike makes a conversion kit to convert the Full size truck transmission for use in the CJ since the input shaft on the full size truck is twice as long as the CJ input shaft. I have done several on these conversions.
