On mine it turns the auto dimming mirror off or on. At night when you get in the Jeep turn the interior lights on and see if the mirror dims then push the button and it should clear up. Mine has a green light when its on as well.
wesleyd - I figured it was for that function. I havent tried that yet, will next time Im in it at night.
I fought to try and find out what those lights and buttons were for too. The '07 manual says nothing about it but the '08 manual does. You can download a free one at jeep.com and save the .pdf file. At first I was told that it turned the Auto mirror on/off but never saw any difference, then I found out it was for the Hands-free U-Connect phone. Even though I didn't get that option, the mirror, being part of another package, is ready to add it later. Here is an excerpt from that ''09 Owners Manual (starts on page 76):

Phone Button
The rearview mirror contains the microphone
for the system (depending on the type of
mirror and radio equipped), and either the
radio or the mirror has the two control buttons
(Phone Button and Voice Recognition Button) that will
enable you to access the system.

Voice Recognition Button
Actual button location may vary with radio.
The individual buttons are described in the
“Operation” section.

i don't think you guys are talking about the same thing. the MKs never had u-connect in the mirrors.
You can download the '08/9 manuals and see the reference for yourself. When I got mine I was told there was the factory installed in the mirror and the dealer installed that was on the sun visor. The info came from Jeep and the dealer and I have a light and a button on my mirror that doesn't appear to do anything but turn the little green light on and off. Since I don't have a cell phone it doesn't really affect me what it does or doesn't do.

(From the 2011 Patriot Owners Manual, CD version)

Voice Command
For best performance, adjust the rearview mirror to provide at least ½ in (1 cm) gap between the overhead console (if equipped) and the mirror.
And from the 2007 FSM.

no, i realize that the microphones are in the mirror, my point is, the button for it has never been in the mirror, which is what the OP was asking about. the button for the u-connect has always been on the radio. he's asking about the power button, which turns on and off the auto dimming rear view mirror. it has nothing to do with the u-connect system.

for reference, he's talking about a mirror that looks like this:

the mirror with the uconnect buttons were only in mid-2000s chrysler cars (300C, charger, grand cherokee, etc, pictured below), but were never in the MKs.

it has these two buttons on it that control the uconnect

i take back my post above. i just got in a 2007 compass limited on our lot, and it has the u-connect buttons in the steering wheel. the picture i posted above with all the buttons is correct, but the fact that i said that the compass/patriot's mirror did not look like that is incorrect.
Thanks for the classification. This is something that I asked Jeep about when I got mine and never received an adequate answer. Not having the u-connect option I had nothing to experiment with and only some info online on 'options' but that was never clear either because it didn't specify which models they were available on.
Strangely, the photo of the 2nd mirror that you posted, IRSmart is exactly what I have in my 07 Compass that came with the U-Connect feature. I did get the Jeep 1 year old and used so I dont know if that was the original equipment from the factory, but my rear view mirror does have the additional buttons on it.
the first picture is the mirror I have and was wondering what the power button was for. it doesnt change the dimming function but must be for the Uconnect. thanx for all the replies and help with this.

it should be for the dimming feature. hold your cell phone up to the light sensor while the mirror is "on" and you should see it dim (it thinks that someone is behin you with their brights on). then turn the button off, while still holding your phone there. you should see the dimmer feature slowly go away.
OK, then for the 1st photo (also see below w noted arrow), what is the right indicator light for? I have bluetooth & voice activation (with the radio buttons) in my 2013 Compass

that is not a light, that is the light sensor to determine how much to dim the mirror.
OK then the light on the left notes that the auto dimer is on and to work it uses the right sensor

Tks for clarifying
