Hey guys, I have been making a rear bumper / spare tire carrier for my TJ for a few weeks now. It has ALL been done on lunch breaks at work, when I'm not too hungry (Otherwise, I go to the deli...The bumper can wait!) Anyway, here are some pics. I TIG welded everything, other than the trailer hitch and Clevis mounts, those were MIG welded. The main bumper is 3/16" 2x4 mild steel tubing.The spare tire carrier is 1.09" x .145 DOM stainless tubing. I got the spindle for the spare tire carrier, and the clevis mounts from A to Z Fabrication. The "plate" for the spare wheel is (was a) broken chromoly axle.

By the way... The bumper isn't done. I still need to fabricate the latching mechanism. I'm planning on using the latch from a YJ tailgate, and the nador bolt that the jaws shut around. Just like a regular car door.

Nice work:thumbsup: what size tire do you plan to carry?
I would think he is going to carry the size tire thats laying behind the thing. 33x12.50 15. I may be wrong tho.

I take it the bumper is 2 x 3 quarter wall mild, and the tire swing looks like SS. OK I need to get busy at lunch rather then surfing the Jeepforum.

Bumpers will have to wait till I mod the frame and get a new body on the thing.... and the new motor and tranny... and axles... OK so next year some time...

GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!:2thumbsup::cheers2:

Thanks for the compliments guys! Yeah the tires are going to be 35", and yes the KM2's in the pics are going on next week!!! I'm almost finished with this thing, so within the next few days, I'll post the final product. So far it has only cost me $43 for the spindle, and $25 for the clevis mounts... For a grand total of $68!!! (plus a few bucks for shipping)

Thats basically what it is, a trailer spindle. Rated for approx. 1000lbs with Tapered bearings. I could have made it myself on the lathe at work... but I didn't feel that it was worth the frustration for 43 bucks! haha.

The latch is going to be from a YJ tailgate, (the actual handle and all), along with the nador bolt for the jaws. One of the engineers at work is getting it for me off of one of his old parts Jeeps. I should have it this week, and I will post pics once I fabricate the mounts and everything. Stay tuned, thats the final part of the bumper!
