Thanks to the greed of photobucket, the photos are no longer embedded into the threads. It has been a pleasure to share this information with forum members and guests. The following link will lead to the bulk of relevant photos related to this thread:

Well today is the first day of final assembly for the CJ. We have done all the mock up, we've painted, welded, sanded, tweaked, all the major parts that are going to be messed with for the most part. (Sorry the tub is not done yet) but we've got to get the roller ready so we can go pick it up soon.

I'll be brief in a lot of this thread as most of the sub assemblies have been done and discussed in other threads, ie. you will see the suspension go in as a whole but I not be going into detail about regearing, caster, hubs, brakes, etc, as I have threaded this information in the past and a majority of this was done in mock up. I'll try to hit on some of the details that you won't see on most other jeeps, why I'm using or making a certain product as well as providing information on the products and distributors that I use.

In 3 days 11/27/07, I will have had this Jeep for one year, I'm sure I could have done this project quicker and spent more time working on it, (ask my wife, she'll tell ya this is where I spend ALL my time) but truthfully I have to balance this with family and work. I am estimating that I have four more months of work before I am 100% complete and ready to road test.

This is thanksgiving weekend so, I do want to thank some people who have been a tremendous help in the past year. My Son who has done ALL the stuff I didn't want to do, he has been great and I think has learned a lot in the process. I can't wait to give him the keys. I'd also like to thank my buddy Eric who comes over and helps every time I ask, he's helped me with parts on my jeep, tools, vendors, just a great friend. Eddie has also been just an incredible asset with the products he makes to custom one offs he's done for me and being able to bounce ideas I had for this Jeep off him when I was first planning the build, THANKS BESRK! And there are another 10 dozen of you guys out there that have sent tools, needed tools, bought, sold or traded parts as we all needed them. Thanks to all you guys for making this an enjoyable platform to receive and provide information. !!!!!

OK, so I finished the 2nd coat of Chassis Black on the frame and misc parts on Wed (nice 75* day), rolled everything into the garage and cranked the heat up until I got back in town last night.

This morning Aryn & I moved the frame out to the driveway and put the suspension back in place. Completely rebuilt, regeared D30 & D44 with new everything! Rebuild and gearing was done by Ted Wendel of Richmond VA.

Brakes, were all reinstalled, sway bar, shocks, pitman connection, bump stops, ...

Brake lines, prop valve,

One thing I'm doing is running the rear lighting harness inside the frame as well as the tow electrical setup:

Thank you!
It was a fun build and has been an even better drive. The kid loves it.
I think his girlfriend didn't realize that other girls would like it too !

I wish I knew as much as you do to do all the work myself!! Any good reference books you recommend?

:laugh: A little jealous is never a bad thing...especially when it comes from a girlfriend!

Man that thing is awesome, I can't stop looking at this thread!

Is there any reason that you went with Herculiner over U-Pol Raptor?
hey fatman, i've been looking through your "projects" the last few days at work. First of all i'd like to say wow. your detailed pictures have been a wonderful thing to many of us here. One question i've had, and yes i've search is "where is your "project frame"? i've searched around and haven't found much.....

I had the Chilton's, the Rebuilders Guide, and the Haynes. After i was done. I kept the Haynes and sold the others.
I liked the Herc because it's a thicker product and hides imperfections better. If prepped and sprayed correctly, it will hold up w the best of them.

Great to see that your back!

Thanks Jeff, I'll poke in every once in a while.

Elliott, glad you like, that's why the pics are here.
I didn't do a frame thread only because there was nothing to "do" to the frame.
I spent about 6 months looking for the right Jeep to use for this project. It had to have a perfect frame, a decent tub, and a running drive train. And it had to be on stock suspension, this way I knew it had not been molested.
Having a good base to work with makes things much easier.

So as far as the frame, here are the things I can remember doing.

Six point cage tie-ins can be seen in the cage thread here:
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=450100

I added some hitch type receivers for my removable steps. They are about half way through the tub thread:
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=431910
The steps are in this thread.

I added a heat shield above the CAT

Added tabs for the rock lights.

Tacked in the front brake line tabs, and moved the rear brake line tab.

Other than that it was sandblasted, sanded, cleaned, sprayed w POR15 and Chassis Black
If you have a specific question, I'd be glad to answer it for ya!

Let me say that the benefit of having a 15 yo to do all the stuff you don't want to was priceless.

*** and to whom ever renewed the membership, THANK YOU!!!
Unnecessary, but a very kind gesture. ***

Might as well add some pics.
Had fun teaching the kid to drive in the snow this winter.

That last picture almost looks fake... it is very cool to see it being used.

That said, any issues since day 1 that you care to share? Since I got my silver one on the road the HEI distributor needed to be replaced... also I had an issue with the brake booster... you can't expect to build something and have everything work great right out the door... always little tweaks here and there.

cb
Hey fatman thanks for the info. I'll go ahead with a few questions even though i have somewhat short of a few thousand. I read you have the 4.5 inch rubicon express lift. What do you think of it so far? Did you have to worry about driveline angle? or even longer driveshafts? this is the lift i'm looking at getting and wanted a "professional" opinion.
anything else would be great
thanks

Hey CB
with 6K miles on it now, the problems I've had were a broken wiper motor link.
I had an alternator / battery issue but that was worked out and Advance Auto swapped the old one at no charge. The Howell computer had a bad prom from the start. Not pleased w the Autometer fuel gauge but i think it's more of a jeep curse.
Three fluid changes now and the diffs, motor, trans & T case show no metals.
Have gone through the jeep and checked torque's, re-lubed everything and really pleased overall w the jeep. Fuel mileage is right about 20 mpg.

Not sure about a "professional" opinion, but I'll give ya what I can.
Overall the lift has to be one of the best I've ridden in. Smooth but not spongy.
The lift itself comes with everything ! VERY complete !
Install is like every other CJ lift and simple to complete in an afternoon.
After you've bleed the brakes, get about 500 miles on the jeep before you worry too much with caster angles. The lift settled about 1/2 inch and caster fell right into spec. I'm not running any angle shims front or back. Stock drive shafts, no CV, but I know others that are running after market shafts and have canted their rear diff. I dropped the T case an inch, maybe that's it ?
One thing I would do different is run 2 1/2" shackle hangers on the front instead of using the adaptive shackles. I was concerned there might be a conflict w the HD steering box bracket, but it looks like it would not be a problem.

If you're adding the lift obviously your adding bigger tires. I'd suggest going through the front end, check or upgrade your ball joints, tie rod ends, repack your hubs, add a brace, HD box bracket, and doing a TRF.
(Just my opinion on money well spent)

thats great stuff to know! :) i always have held true to "you pay for what you get" the lift has had tons of excellent reviews. you made the comment " add a brace, HD box bracket, and doing a TRF. " I assume you mean a powersteering brace, and what on earth is a TRF? I couldn't find in your thread if you did a body lift or not... also, did you go through all the bushings?
I imagine he's referring to a Tie Rod Flip.

Thanks USMC !

Yes Tie Rod Flip.
Used a one inch Prothane BL (body lift) ;)
I am in the middle of rebuilding my YJ (I know, get out of here) and I have an electrical question. My area of struggle is definitely wiring. I have por 15 on my frame and firewall and in the rear corners of the tub underneath my tub. I noticed your ground locations look like they are painted over and now that I am getting closer I would like to know if I need to have bare metal to ground to and then repaint?

Thank you!
