Omelet's Build Thread (aka The Bison)!

That's right, I am FINALLY making my build thread! I have been modding this Jeep for three years now so I have a lot of catching up to do. Just bare with me, because this is going to take some time to get through. I will start from the beginning and try not to miss anything. :2thumbsup:

It all started in 2004 when I saw the beast that AEV and SuperLift made.



Not only did it look awesome, but it boasted some incredible performance. A Jeep Grand Cherokee with QDII coupled to a HEMI! I had to have it! Unfortunately, being a lowly military man also trying to support a family I could not afford a $45K vehicle, let along the $5K+ for the lift tires and other goodies.

Finally after the market took a crap in late 08 the time had come! I started looking around and pricing the different models and option. By then the CRD had also come out which I wanted more than the Hemi, but I could not find one in Cali :thumbdown: I found a few in other states, but they were too far away and more than I could afford. So I ended up scoring a 2005 Limited with every option available that year and 40K miles for $16K! It seemed no one wanted to buy a big Hemi powered vehicle at that time, so local dealers were pricing them very low. Even a year after I bought it I couldn't find a better deal :thumbsup:

This was the day I brought it home!





Yes it is dirty because I insisted on swinging by a trail on the way home to test out 4lo! I wanted to make sure the t-case and ELSDs were working properly. :D In fact the first mod I made was to remove the front air dam before I hit the trail.

Can't wait to get to a computer that shows pictures from online storage websites (work blocks all flikr and photobucket type websites - boo!!)
I see ipod cables - anything exciting about your ipod integration that might make it into the build thead?

Just looking thru your pictures here and on another website, but have you thought about going to town with some engine enamel on the underside of your beast? With the underside as visible as you have it, I bet some black or gunmetal paint on the exhaust or frame rails might be a cool contrast...
As for the Orange and Khaki, I do like the combo. Little bold, but even with that orange and blue it's a good combo.

Does remind me of hunting colors a little, but I have two hunter puppies in my house so of course I'm a fan.
That green is one of my favorite colors but you're right: it's totally outplayed right now. It's even worse with winter and ski clothing. Everyone on the mountains seems to be rocking that color or a blue.
In defense of the green, my fiance keeps joking with me telling me that lime green is the hot color this year. I think she's right (been popular in the snow sports crowd in Colorado for a couple years now), but what about painting parts on the rig that are easily painted and switching colors up from year to year? Keep your purchased parts blue since those are readily available, but calipers, springs, under body parts - switch up the color whenever the mood suits ya and keep things interesting...
Well judging by how their JK looks I'd say they can take a beating! The companies started as an aircraft armor manufacturer. They needed the Helos to have armored floors but steel was too heavy, so they used aluminum. Then they used the same stuff for under their vehicles and found they worked great for skid plates (armor). The skids are supposed to be able to take a hit very well. They say the difference between steel is that steel will bend when hit hard enough, but this aluminum has some what of an elasticity to it. It will take the hit and bounce back. At least that is how I understood it was he was explaining everything. I will see if I can find a written explanation :D
I'm guessing that their aluminum that they use has a higher elastic deformation (will rebound) before it hit's the plastic deformation (permanent damage) than the steel that would normally be used for this. If it's thick aluminum, it probably could take a hell of a beating and come back for more. Plus it won't rust after you hit some rocks with it which is a huge plus!

Yeah, going to have to pick these up! You may have posted it before, but where did you get these and how much did they run you? Maybe their official name again would be a big help - looks awesome!
Oh and I need to change out the brake fluid, I am sure I need new stuff in there by now :)
I'm sure those stock brakes are PISSED about having to stop all the weight of those bigass tires you keep adding on to!
Hey Omelet – I picked up a set of wheels and tires off a Sahara yesterday and have run into the same problem you had when it comes to fitting the spare under the vehicle. I am going to modify my hitch similar to how you changed yours, but was wondering if there was anything that you would have done differently if you did it again?

Also, what did you use to modify the holes in order to accept the carriage bolt? Any tricks there?
What suspension setup is he running? His ride looks almost identical to mine.
