Hello new to the group kinda. Anyway, recently bought a 1986 jeep wagoneer xj. The axle (currently) in it has no provision for the vacuum connect/disconnect 4wd even tho it has the 2hi/4hi switch on the console. Just curious of what kind of axle it is. Will send a picture of it.
2nd picture is where there’s no vacuum 4wd switch.

It sure looks like a Dana 30. Probably swapped in from a later model XJ Cherokee

What year Cherokee had no vacuum 4wd hookup? Thought they all would’ve had that setup.

I think it went away about 91.

Hmmmm. So how would u get it out of 4wd if it was “stuck” in it? Not sure if it is or not cause I haven’t actually tried to see if it is or not

It should have a high pinion for the XJ but I can’t see it. It is a D30.
The axle disconnect is not a necessity.

I’m just curious mainly about the 4wd part of it. There’s a little vacuum line under the passenger side floor pan a little bit and it’s supposed to be hooked up to the front. But nothings there so

Tcase goes 2x4 or 4x4 and low...

The CAD was to make it like it had Hubs like in the old days it would free spin. Then they went to No cad and the front turns. Like all TJs and JKs But Now guess what its back all JLs have cad too and its trouble as well. fails

Mine just has the hi, low, and neutral. Not the hi, low, 4a, and neutral like the later cherokees did(can’t remember what they called it). I’m pretty sure someone swapped this front end in and it’s just not the right one.

Look on the back side of the transfer case for a round metal tag that has the model number. Sounds like a 249.

Haven’t checked that yet. What are ways to see if it’s a 249 if the tags not there?

Just checked it’s a np228 and it may have the original front axle still. Just leaves me with how it engages 4wd with no vacuum actuator…

is the fill plug on your front differential a rubber plug or a screw in type ? it might be a dana 30 high pinon or a dana 44. there is a place on the web for your build sheet . i would try to find it and retain a copy on your computer for further use...im sorry i cant remember the site i got mine for my WJ and my XJ...you can search in this site here on JEEP FORUM for build sheets and see if there isn't a link to where you get your build sheets...you need your DMV number from your wagoneer before you can get the build sheet..

Read about the 228 here. The Novak Guide to the New Process 208, 219, 228 & 229 Transfer Cases as found in FSJ & XJ Jeeps, 1980-1991

"The NP228 had a direct-drive 2wd mode. It used an internal, open differential for four-wheel-drive mode and high range and featured a fully locked mode in four-wheel-drive, low range. It featured vacuum actuation for mode operation and a conventional shifter linkage for range operation. This transfer case was used in the XJ Cherokees as the optional in lieu of the NP207.

The NP229 was similar to the NP228, but it featured an internal viscous coupling for full-time operation. This transfer case was offered in the FSJ Grand Wagoneer."

That’s the thing, the front axle currently in mine doesn’t have a vacuum actuator on the axle. It’s just a plain old solid axle. The dash 2hi/4hi selector is there and a little bit of some vacuum lines with it and that’s it.

My '93 XJ just had a plain old Dana 30 front, Chrysler 8.25 rear, no vacuum anything.

Kinda how mine is set up. Except not sure in the rear tho

According to the official Jeep shop manual I had, the rear could also have been a Dana 35, they were both very similar in outward appearance. I had the Chrysler, and I put in a Lock Right lunchbox, worked fine, just had to pull the c-clip axles and change the diff gears, left the carrier intact.

Thought about finding an explorer 8.8 myself to put in

Forget about vacuum actuators on the axle.be glad it isn't there.They have nothing to do with shifting the transfercase into 4x4(np228 is an odd one). And the front is definitely a d30 not a d44 from a tj

Just checked the rear. It’s either a Chrysler 8.25 or a Dana 35. Kinda hard to measure with the gas tank in the way

Mine looks more like a d35. But not too sure tho
