Hey hil210,
As soon as I get it I’ll let you know! lol Jasper was backordered when my mechanic ordered it for me, but its finally going to be put in next week (hopefully!). For me it was simple math and ease that made my decision. My JK is in almost new condition, except for the engine, so throw a new engine in for 8000 and its gonna be worth 15,000 or more again. Plus it will practically be like having a new jeep and I hope to get at least 5 more years out of it. I toyed with the idea of ordering a new wrangler, but obviously that would take months and for what I was looking for would be around 45,000 bucks. So since I love my jeep and have customized almost everything to my liking I decided to go the new engine route. I just hope I get it back soon, I am sick of driving rentals! Good luck with your issue, but if everything else is in great shape and you like it, then go for the reman engine. Jasper is supposed to be good and they remanufacture them better than new.
Oh man that is crazy, I didnt even think of the back order. I love the jeep. Built it from stock to what it is now. Tried to baby it and only drive it on the weekends as well. So I would really hate to get rid of it. Its in great condition and I bought it brand new in 2012. The price of new jeeps are insane. Im hoping they dont say I need a new engine and its a "smaller" fix of replacing the lifters and rocker arms, possibly the cam shafts. Just weighing my options for the worst possible news. Saw your post and you were kinda in the same boat as me. Appreciate the response, I am waiting to hear back from the shop. Going on two weeks now for them checking on it. Seems kinda hard to find reliable, timely, mechanic shops now or maybe im just impatient. LOL.

I am no expert on the 3.6 but if you have the tick doesn't that just need the heads replaced? Maybe also the cams? It shouldn't need a full engine replacement and that should cost way less than a full engine. I think the new/reman mopar heads are like $1400 bucks and labor shouldn't be that crazy but what a couple of days labor MAX?

I mean I did the full engine swap myself on my 2007 in my garage in 2 long days and I'm no mechanic and hadn't done anything like that before. A real mechanic should be able to do heads in a day or two?

Hil210 may get lucky, but my JK wasn’t so fortunate. I had a catastrophic breakdown and a complete teardown/rebuild would have been comparable in price (and then only to have an engine with other possible issues). For me a reman engine made sense, especially since my jeep has so few miles and is in excellent condition. Wish I had caught my issue in time, but oh well.

Fixing the infamous tick involves replacing the rocker arms and replacing the cam shafts if the tick was not addressed soon enough. That’s it.

and the metal from those parts goes through the oil. when a roller bearings fail these are pin bearings on a shaft. they turn to metal dust eats its pin first. why i always liked stamped steel rockers, push rod single cam. has a half spherical bearing. not much to go wrong. not high tech. rollers have always had issues with wear. 24 of them in a v6.

But the 3.6 is a interference design. if one of the timing chains failed it would be catastrophic. personally if a block eats a cam it as well should be considered the same. like rebuilding a block and dont clean it. cleaning the block is like the most important part. not just a thought, it looks good. 5k at the dealer to do new roller and cams. Jasper that is about what they cost then a few K to install. I would go with Jasper at that point. You can buy the latest rollers/ they dont cost to much cams are not bad unless you need 4. Labor is high to work on a block in the jeep. bet there is more labor to do the top end complete. then to just R&R the block. or its a push.

Just in case anybody is curious…the engine finally came in last week and I picked ip the jeep this morning. Total cost was 8000. Wow, what a difference over the stock engine! The Jasper reman feels better than when I first bought it. Great pickup, very smooth and responsive. As long as everything holds up, I will be one happy Jeeper.
