If the engine is original, then it is a 1965 or 1966. The 4J in the engine serial number signifies gasoline F-Head pre 1967 and I found reference to a 1965 with engine number of 4J383887 and a 1966 with the engine number of 4J405443

Can you check on the firewall number again? 10C in the first part of the serial number would be diesel powered built in Canada. If it was originally diesel, the serial/vin tag should begin with 8310 C. If you have a Canadian built diesel early CJ-5 you have a rare one.

serial number range for diesel early cj-5's
CJ-5 serial number for the ’61 CJ-5 was 10,001 and the ’68 model year started at 11,156

Yep, looks like a factory perkins diesel powered made in canada early cj5. Congrats on having a rare one, sorry I can't give you a better guess on year other than from 1961 to 1968.

Haven't seen may canadian serial number tags so just having 10 C threw me off.

It is not a 1949, CJ5 production began in 1955. The insurance co can not go by the serial number without also having the model code.

That prefix of 10C signifies that it is a diesel powered CJ5 between the years of 1961 and 1968. There is not a comprehensive breakdown of serial number by year for that diesel powered model.

No longer has diesel engine. Has a gas with serial number listed above. Would like to know engine code or size to make it easier finding parts

Hi older cars/jeeps/trucks had the year stamped in the tail light lens. you should be able to find it there.. yes NOT a 49.. Jeeps in the forties had flat fenders with no curve down in the front.
good luc
