New rebuild on a 304 done the break in, ran at 2000 rpms for 30 minutes. After it sits overnight at first start up tappits make noise.
Has good oil pressure 80 at start up 65 at full warm up.
Is the oil bleeding down ?

I am always optimistic positive thinking -
first thought -oil filter - some have drain back valve issues, use a quality filter WIX, PURALATOR.

hope the fast easy idea helps.

How long does it go on? My 258 does the same thing for a couple of seconds after starting, has since the rebuild. The lifters bleed down a bit after sitting overnight, but once the oil gets pumping, it stops. I have similar oil pressure. 30k on the rebuild.
After you get about 10-15 Grand on the engine, use a quart of Lucas (regular stuff)

substituted for one of your quarts of oil at every oil change,

Not now during break in---after a longer term break in!

I reckon you are using Zinc during the break in period?

Did you vary from a OEM build?

It’s the same way just a second or two then it’s fine. Thanks for your input Jim

Ok thanks for the heads up on the Lucas
Yes I’m using comp cam zinc break in oil.
No just straight up OEM rebuild
Thanks Jim

Thanks for the advice on oil filter, but a WIX filter with and anti flow back in it it’s been sometime now and I haven’t heard it.
Thanks again Jim
This is the WIX oil filter I use on the 304 in my ‘79 CJ5:

Glad she is running better!
The shop that did my machine work said to use Brad Penn oil because its high in zinc unlike most other oils, not just for break in, but for the life of the motor.

I run regular old diesel oil in the summer time, as it’s 20W40 or 20W50 and has lots of zinc and phosphorus in it. You can use Rotella T, but any Diesel oil will have the additives. I usually do 10W30 in the winter and just put one of those ZDDP little bottles in it to top it off.

Hi, All oil filters have a Anti drain back valve Just some work and some don't Mostly cheap filters don't work well.
Can you tell us a little about your rebuild? did you install new cam and lifters, stock or performance? Was it a stock rebuild or performance?

good luck take care be safe
