They help with rubbing issues that may occur, but they really just push the wheels out more. That allows for a cooler look, a better stance, and just ensures you don't run on the spring perches, or lower control arms.

Yes they put the tires out further. With stock wheels you need them to use tires over aprox, 11 inches wide. some times they use them with 15" wheels to provide clearence for the brake calipers.

they sell as sets of 2... you really only need them for the front if you have rubbing issues. I would still get 2 sets though. They make the stance wider and look nice. It is a cheap way to look bigger.

It's easy enough to add them later if you see the need. Just do your mods one step at a time, and plan your next step carefully.
Research is much easyer today than it was just 10 years ago! Look at all of lifts available and you will see that one will include something that another doesn't, the more familiar you become with these things, the better decisions you will make!!

Between the spacers, the wheels and the wider tires my jeeps footprint (width) is about 11 inches wider than stock.
