Yeah, Jeep (and other manufacturers) cover their a$s in these commercials by saying "Professional Driver on a closed course. Do not attempt"

I really think that something is fishy here. Either it wasn't "only 19" or you were going way faster than you think/said. The owners manual of my 04 Grand Cherokee says to not go through water higher than 24" which is about the top of the front bumper. I vaguely remember the Wrangler manual says something about 30" (but I might be mistaken)

The way the airbox snorkel is set up on the TJ it doesn't really allow water to simply splash in there unless there is a TON of water. I don't know exactly how the JK is set up but I am sure they have improved the design.

I am guessing that the OP is downplaying the stats in order to try to get the dealership/insurance company to cover the repairs. Or he modified the airbox or put on a cold air intake or something.

Who knows...I imagine the insurance company will pick up the tab since he probably had a loan on it and they force you to take collision on a vehicle with a loan. Expect the rates to go through the roof, you might just want to try to repair it on your own time/money.

oh and post the vin number here so that no one on this thread buys that thing down the road. haha

ok, I watched the video a couple of times. It looks like the first puddle was the culprit (IMO). It looks like you hit it way too fast. So have you or the dealership had a chance to look into it? I would be really surprised if you actually did a large amount of internal damage. Like others mentioned, if it truly was "hydroLOCKED", you wouldn't even be able to try to crank it over. It is possible that you have a wet air filter that is choking out the air flow or that you got some sort of electrical component wet that shorted out. Possibly in or around your coil pack.

So have you heard anything from the dealership? Did you open up your air box to take a look inside?

Even if it does start, it doesn't mean it hasn't received a death blow.
Oh i agree... I would do my best to check everything out for signs of damage, maybe even drop the pan and see...

at the least, draining the oil will let you know if water actually got in the engine or not, right?

If the inside of the air box is dry and there is no signs of sand/mud remnants, then you have a pretty decent indication that water didn't get in through the intake.

I bet we are just going to find out that this was an electrical issue.

Just to get the facts straight. What was the Dealers 'Offcial' writeup of the damage to the JK?

Why? Here's a pic of the JK intake (from my JK - I have an AEM system with an Outerwears prefilter):

The water would have to come in, go down the intake tube, then back up and through the filter (while not draining out the holes in the intake). If the OP submerged the JK then 'maybe' but.....somehow I don't thing we're getting the whole story.

I agree with PVRubicon....something isn't adding up. That water got in the engine some other way than through the small inlet, through the filter and UP the intake hose. The fact that you actually could crank the engine after it stalled means it wasn't hydrolocked.

If water, did get in the engine, it came in through some other hole, vacuum line maybe? Or it simply splashed up onto some electronics and shorted/water logged something like your coilpack.

It makes a difference because if you had water sucked into the engine through the top of the engine, then it would actually lock the pistons up and keep them from moving. i.e. your engine wouldn't be able to try to crank hence the 'lock' portion of hydrolock. It literally locks up the engine.

Dealerships and insurance companies can/will generalized damage in order get paperwork processed.
