How often do you change the TC fluid

Not sure what the factory suggests, but i do it about every 30,000 miles. Its not hard nor expensive to do.

I do it every year. same with trans fluid. cant hurt. There are two plugs on the back cover of the t case. both use a 10mm allen wrench. the bottom one is the drain, top is the fill. drain it out, replace plug, fill in fill hole until it comes out. it should be about 1.5 quarts of ATF

---Be sure to loosen the FILL plug FIRST, ---

(ONLY then the drain plug).

Reports of them being difficult to remove some times.

Is there a filter or anything else that needs to be changed, or just the fluid? What fluid do I use D/M III, D/M IV??

2 quarts of d/m 3 would be best, but d/m 4 would be fine. the drain/fill plug on mine was a 1-3/16" or 30mm socket.

I change mine when I change the tranny fluid.

...and don't forget to get a pump thing to get the fluid back in. There isn't much room up there to pour in the fluid.

Yep dex 3 gets chewed up pretty quick in there. 30K is the interval I use.

BTW it's Dexron 6 not 4

So on the 231 in my '98, the fill plug is almost completely rounded out. I was able to pick up a new plug from a junkyard but I haven't attempted to take the fill plug out. When I put the allen wrench in there it fits but I'm afraid that it's going to be stuck and I'll make it worse. Does anyone have any suggestions I can try? I thought of an easy out or reverse drill bit, but I don't think that's a place I should try using either one.

If its a steel plug, weld a nut onto it and remove it with a ratchet.

I would go buy a set of star bits (torx) and find the one that's closest and POUND it in so it fits good and snug.

Xfer is ALUMINUM! And not thick.

It took a while since I didn't want to hit it too hard, but I finally got a torx 55 socket tapped into it and broke it loose with a 1/2" breaker bar. I took it out and replaced it with the "new" one I had so hopefully this weekend I can change the fluid.

The transmission and transfer case both use dex/merc III right?

Ask him and let us know.

Probably found trash in the case and so he filled it again and then emptied it to see if any more came out.
