I pulled this axle assembly from a '98 XJ in the salvage yard. Dana 30 HP, just pulled the cover, the stock fill plug is obviously magnetic with a bunch of residue, the odd area is where I touched it. Also, ^ and < markings on the bearing caps and housing makes me think these gears, or the bearings, or both, may have been replaced. Very little lash in the gears, how do you tell if they are stock, match the rear? Asking any differential Guru's to give me their opinion from the pics.
How do these Dana 30 HP diff gears look?

I'm pretty sure the gears will match front and rear-end. Its the Chrysler 8.25, 29 spline based on the year (2000 XJ); it has two tags, one reads '35' the other looks to read '2280' but its rusted and difficult read. Would like to know that the front and back diffs will have the same gear ratios.

I'm no guru but I'll pitch in.
If you have the gears there with you, you can get the ratio if you just
count the teeth on the ring gear and divide by the number of teeth on the pinion.
An automatic 4.0 would have a 3.55 ratio.
The end cap in the third picture is positioned correctly, the "V" marking on
the cap matches the marking on the housing face. Can't tell from the fourth
picture as markings are not visible enough in the pic.
All in all the gears look to be in good condition. If it wasn't wheeled much,
there doesn't have to be much lash in the gears if gear oil was changed on time.
The few shavings on the plug are no big deal.

RLE, awesome, thanks! Greatly appreciated; I'm going after the rear diff this weekend, pop the cover, clean with brake cleaner, new gasket, and 75/140 fluid. Fairly certain they're not LSD, so no friction modifier. May post additional pics depending on how they look. Thanks again.
