Make sure the peddle to clutch system is working properly. Maybe the skid plate was gradually coming off which tweaked the clutch system adjustment. How does a skid plate just fall off?. $2,000 for a manual transmission rebuild sounds a bit strong (well, I haven't had one built in a while I must admit) and there is no better time than the present to learn how to drop the transmission yourself and only have to pay the labor for a shop to rebuild the tranny. Just my .02 cents.
help with 2nd gear
Thanks for any recommendation. This soley is about $ for the time being. I have a 2001 TJ with a brand new clutch, recently my skid plate came off, and I have not been drivng it until it gets put back on. However I did notice that now my second gear will not engage (grinds) sometimes it stays in. Maybe when plate came off and the brief time that I drove it damage it. Jeep 2001 TJ does need the support of the skid plate to support transmission. My the big question is. MY previous Jeep 2000 that I had for 21 years but lost it due to accident still had a working glutch and transmission.. all good. So on that I do believe I'm pretty good and easy with manual driving.

thank you for the reply... rusted out botls and past shady work done that I was unaware of reattachment . Yes just under 2000 I have a quote, but maybe better if mechanic can rebuild.
I have been aslo told if I dont hit too many ruff patches its okay to drive for a short time without skid plate. No, you shouldn't drive it without the skidplate, it's the trans mount that supports the weight of the trans and tcase. All that weight is now on your motor mounts.
You can buy a brand new AX-15 trans for about $1600 dollars in the US. Not sure how much it would be in Canada.
