Got my intake manifold off.. but i have questions..

Ok i got the plenum off.. you guys were right the front bolts on the left and right were the hardest to get off.. I broke one on the passenger side.. I knew it wouldnt come off and saw it twisting so i tried to go slow then tighten then slow and tighten but it snapped... Hopefully i can get it off with some pb blaster and vice grips...

My question tho is can i do something to clean those intake valve's ? I looked inside and they are extremely grimey... Like solid black bumpy thickness of oil/black lol.. Maybe i can use like brake cleaner on them ? Or would that be a no no ?

Also I dont have a shop vac.. i got some particles of dirt inside the lifter vally i cleaned it as best as i could but i cant get it all.. I did use 2 cans of brake cleaner and compressed air to clean around the manifold and valve covers before i took it off but some dirt still got inside... Would this be ok or ?? And I also got some coolant in the oil too.. I did buy new oil tho so i guess an oil change would be good enough right ?

Definitely do an oil change after you're done. With cleaning the valves, is it possible for you to remove them? You need a special tool but once you have them off you can just wire wheel them. I don't know how well brake cleaner will get of the baked on stuff but if you do use brake cleaner in there it shouldn't be a problem as it evaporates off fully anyway. If you can't take the valves of you could try using a razor blade and scrape off all the flat parts on the valves and the whole head surface. Just be careful on the head so you don't slice into it accidentally.
I would NOT suggest using brake cleaner on your valves. After you get everything put back together run some Seafoam through it (there are several videos on how-to) or go old-school with a bit of water.

You'll want you get as much of the solid contaminants out before you put the intake back on. Grit really isn't good on the inside of an engine. And definitely change your oil if you got any of the coolant in it.

Good luck with the broken bolt!
I've done seafoam before it doesnt do anything but make my engine clank real hard when i turn it back on.. I dont like that stuff..

I guess I'll go to kmart and buy a shop vac.. $30-40 is better then messing my engine up... But damn thsi sure is turning out to be an expensive fix... I've spent $250 on coolant, oil, tools and parts for this...

For the longest time i thought my plenum was fine... however now that I took it off and removed the pan... there is oil all over the inside of the intake manifold and the pan is layerd in honey colord oil... Pna my pan doesnt look dirty like other people's ive seen but there is oil all over it and in between the gasket as well. The gasket is hard as a rock, and looks like its slightly blown on one corner. Now comes the anoying part of cleaning everything.... Btw guys i saw a video on how to put a intake gasket on and the guy used rtv around the water jackets on both sides of the gasket.. and instead of using those rubber gaskets on both front and back he used a big bead of rtv... should i do this as well ?

When I did mine, some crud fell into the motor for me as well. I got a dust free rag and manually removed every piece I could then poured some fresh oil across the galley to flush remnants into the pan. I then did an oil change before starting. Seemed to do the trick as I had no issues afterwards. Cleaned out the intake with mopar ccc and wiped by hand and followed with the ccc procedure once everything was back together to clear out oil build up. My gasket and pan looked just like yours when I took it apart. I used the rubber gaskets that came with the felpro kit and I may be leaking anitfreeze now as I have a minor leak that I am having trouble tracking down so some atv might not be a bad idea.
I tried to use ez-outs to get the broken bolts out with no success. I ended up drilling out the bolt and using a heli-coil kit to repair.
Shop vac is a necessity. I used the RTV instead of the front and rear rubber gaskets. It worked great. I put it on nice and thick. I let it set for about 30 minutes before I installed the intake. I cleaned my intake clean overnight. Probably used a gallon of de greaser on it or more. Hose it off and let it dry overnight. You can use compressed air to dry it well.
Yea i just got a shop vac and some pb blaster i couldnt find my bottle.. Im going to try and remove the bolt ina few minutes... hopefully its comes out so i dont have to drill and tap the sucker... because my drill is broken lol. Im going to use soem rtv on the water jackets on the block and the gasket.. I dont trust this thing to not leak coolant into my engine..

I only used a few dabs on the corners to keep it in place but it couldn't hurt.

ONLY use rtv on the back and front of the block where the rubber strip or cork gaskets go. there is NO water jacket anywhere else other than the front of the heads. do NOT use rtv on the intake to head gaskets and do NOT use it on the plenum pan. you watched a video for a chevy, totally different animal.
Ok well.. I put it all together well torqued the manifold on anyway.. I wish you had told me this before hand ratmonkey, I've been asking this question for a few days now.. I used a little rtv on the water jackets like in the video and used alot on the front and back gasket.. and i didnt use those rubber gaskets... I guess I'll find out if i messed it up when i turn it on and have a big vacuum leak and water leak wont I ?.. Would sure suck to have to do this again..
I would let it set overnight before running it.
Yea im going too.. Im just putting all the crap back together now... Cant find any of my tools what a mess..
Don't worry. They are in the motor now.
:ranton:
Rant on for ??

Anyway its all together now.. all bolts and plugs where they should be.... Gosh my wrists hurt .... ow... 10 hours this took me and i skipped doing my valve cover gaskets and fixing the o ring on my power steering reservoir... uhg another day for that.. lol but alot of it was talking to neighbors and driving to the store to get things i didnt think id need. Oil is drained im gonna fill it up with some cheapo oil... but as for the coolant.. I dont think I'll fill that up until tomorrow.. I think i'll wait overnight for the rtv...... Gosh I hope i put this thing on right and i dont have any coolant leaks or something... I'll be pissed if i have to take it all apart again.. !!!

Fyi ratmonkey i didnt use rtv on the intake jackets.. I used it on the front water jackets and the rear ones.. there are 4 total.. and i only used a small amount. like a thin layer

FWIW chlorinated brake clean is totally safe as an engine solvent with one catch.....NEVER COMBUST THE STUFF.

That's why it's brake clean, not engine clean. Turns into the equivalent of nerve gas once run through a firing cylinder. Or a shop heater

But just cleaning parts on the bench, etc. Or spraying the back of valves with 24 hours dry time and no intake manifold. Those kinds of things are totally safe.

IMO it's actually superior to carb cleaner for cleaning a carb that's in your hands.

total sidetrack of the thread, glad the project has gone well and good luck with the truck!
I didnt bother cleaning the valves with the brake cleaner.. I was using the weaver stuff thats non clorinated. People said not too early on so i didnt.. I probly should have and just sucked the gunk up with my shop vac.. they were pretty grimy...

Anyway I'll report back tomorrow morning... hopefully i installed the sucker right and it wont leak ... God i would be so angry at myself.

If they did it would be "rant on".
Oh lol no i found all my tools and sockets.. I made sure not to put any near the engine.. I just couldnt find all of them with the mess of wrappers boxes and dirty towels all over the place
