Faulty TIPM Module?

34729 Views 13 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  carlosburitica
A couple of weeks ago my door locks stopped working. I couldn't lock or unlock my doors from the keyfob or from the switch on the doors. When I used my keyfob my horn would still honk and the lights would still flash but nothing from the actual locks. I was finally able to take it into my mechanic this week and he thought it was the master door switch located under the driver door panel. He switched that out and the locks still didn't work. He said he then spent a good deal of time on the phone with Chrysler and they said that I must have a short in the TIPM module (Totally Integrated Power Module). He then said that Chrysler said unfortunately this was a known problem in Chrysler vehicles and because of this the part was on national backorder and they didn't know when it would become available. So long story short I had to pay my mechanic $100 this week to diagnose a problem that he supposedly can't fix.

My question is has anyone else had this problem or know if this is the correct solution. He said that when the part is available it is a $350 part plus labor to fix which seems obscene to me and I'm about to start making some very angry phone calls to Chrysler to let them know how happy I am with there product.

Thanks in advance.

Also, does anyone know if all Chrysler TIPM modules are compatible to be replaced provided a reflashing from the dealer or if it is only ones for the same year and model? I will probably go digging in a junkyard for another one to see if I can replace it myself.

I would say your problem sounds like the WCM,The WCM controls your Door Lock.I have a 08 KK,that had a no start due to the WCM,plus the door locks didnt work.Double check your fuses, and make sure they are in tight. If you need a WCM,it needs to be programmed.
There are also relays on the main board of the TIPM that control door locks so if there is a short there then it would be a faulty TIPM.
Just wanted to mention that 08s had a WCM problem, mine was replaced twice, plus there a TSB for WCM problem. You could try a reset and see if the module works again because they are known to lock up.
I am in a nightmare tipm module situation myself. I drive an 08 town and country. My van broke down while in Orlando fl on a vacation. Because of this stupid part on back order, we had to leave the van and drive a rental back.
Now I've contacted Chrysler and some how mysterically they now have my part and my van is ready. Now I have to fly back to Orlando and pick up my van to drive home.
I have huge out of pocket expenses over this. Waiting to hear back from Chrysler to find out what they are going to do about this!

damn - how much is this costing you? add it up plz....I am curious!
I too know the feeling just recently I had a total TIPM failure which subsequently made me drag my jeep in to the dealer. I would unlock the car with the key fob and it would start honking incessantly and wipers front and back start going and spewing all the wiper fluid, the back window popping open and door locks start sputtering and not to mention the dash and gauges and headlights start going off like I'm having a rave in my jeep. Just found out its the TIPM and its going to cost about $530.00

Angry 6 weeks and counting
2010 T&C with 39,300 miles. In service 22 months. October 30th woke up to dead battery. October 31st woke up to dead battery. Took to dealership November 1st. Two weeks of paying for battery, miscellaneous parts such as TIPMs. Chrysler doesn't like dealership and says if we want to hold out any hope for reimbursement we need to use one that they want. Take to their "certified" dealership. They cannot find anything wrong with it. Except the minor problem of every morning the battery is dead. Replace TIPM and PCM. Declare problem fixed. They tell Chrysler to close out our case because there is nothing wrong with van. They ran diagnostic tests and got no codes. Next day battery is dead. They give up and give van back to first dealership. To appease Chrysler they send van 120 miles to their sister dealership which is certified. That was November 23rd. I called Chrysler to tell them where van is and find out they closed case because dealer #2 said it was fixed. December 10, we call again to ask what Chrysler will do to help us. they say "Nothing - your van is at a non-certified dealership." This despite telling them on 11/27 and 11/30 where the van was and that since 11/23 their certified dealership has been working with Chrysler in MI to fix problem. Apparently not real good with record keeping OR making cars.
After reading about some being without vehicles for 4 months, I guess we don't have it so bad. Oh yeah - the Executive service representative from Chrysler told us yesterday she has never heard of a problem like this or having to have more than one TIPM. Then why do I get 29,000 hits on Google for Chrysler TIPM and there are over 3,200 views on the thread on the Chrysler forum line "2010 Chrysler T&C TIPM problem?"

2011-2012 tipm issues

I am with a law firm that recently filed a class action lawsuit against Chrysler involving its 2011-2012 model year Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Grand Caravan, and Dodge Durango vehicles. The lawsuit alleges that these Chrysler vehicles are equipped with a defective TIPM that causes numerous electrical problems for the vehicles and poses serious safety risks for consumers.

If you would like to learn more about our lawsuit or share your experience with us, please call (866) 981-4800, email [email protected], or visit our website: http://goo.gl/dvk028

Thanks,
Ellen

Great idea. Should have included others like the '07 Grand Cherokee. That vehicle was an electrical nightmare from a week off the lot until the day that I traded it back in.

this should be done with the Clock springs. they did recall them but ONLY 08-12 and ONLY the RIGHT hand drive and only in the USA. All Left hand drive use the same flawed part and will fail for the same reasons. During that investigation it was determined that we Left hand drive Jeep NEVER would see dusty road. DUST was found to be the issue. But it get worse, water can cause these thing to short as well. In most cases the its just the airbag wont function. There is also the possibility it will go off. I was the luck one that it just went off. Jeep pulled the data from the Black box with my permission and had a Bosch tech come and pull the data from the SRS system recorder. They found that the Jeep had NO incident to record. The only fault was the code for driver side airbag wiring. They had my jeep for 4 weeks. to tell me that they felt that it was somehow my fault from one of the modification, no specific. Jeep said the general mods lift tires bumpers. BUT if that caused the srs to deploy the bags it WOULD have recorded it as crash event. It was the clock spring that they NEVER even looked at. When the airbag goes off the seat belts SHOULD go off BEFORE the airbag to pull you back. mine did NOT since the system never deployed it. when this happened my arm was crossing the steering wheel and was broken.

Right hand Jeeps the fix for the mail jeeps was some kind of dust shield to limit the dust intrusion to the clock spring that is a OPEN thin grease covered tape wire. I reported this to the NTHSB(?). but unless people die that is like howling at the moon. Jeep never fixed this issue on our 012. since replacing the same defect parts with more defective parts is the definition of insanity. We removed all the airbags and seat belts and had to replace that with a true 5 point harness and seats that are designed for them.

Jeep might have fixed this IF i was not injured but the second they found this out. it went straight to their lawyers. The lawyers i talked to said it was just to costly to do this for a broken arm.........

Best of luck with fighting the machine. We had a saying once upon a time. "It don't mean nothin, not a thing"
