Jeff, aren't you the one that bought the new to you lake house retreat ?

If so, how is that going and have you popped the cherry on the fire pit and done a real cook yet ?
Yes, there is so much to do up there and so many things to explore and learn about, cooking hasn't been on our list as much as it once was. As we get acclimated, I am sure it will come back, stay tuned!

Found this little beauty out in the desert today while buzzing around in my rzr. No telling how long it's been out there. I went way out off the beaten path, wasn't on any preserve, national, or state park either. Just a section of land people seem to have forgotten about. All it says on the bottom of it is, made in the USA and the letter D

My guess would be an unmarked Lodge and not a very old pan .

The upper edge just looks to thick to me for it to be very old ?

Granted though, it is just a picture that I am looking at and not
the pan in my hand .

One way or the other, great find .

I've noticed some new cast iron company's are popping up lately. They have really smooth bottoms and are made like the "good ol stuff". But $100 for a 8" pan, I'll stick to my $15 lodges that just fine for me. :grin2:

Has anyone bought any of these new pans? They do get really good reviews?

Just bought my 1st pig yesterday, I don't think I can ever eat store bought bacon again...

Looking for some good pork recipes

A few years ago my mom gave me a cast iron pan that she cooked in from the early 1970's to the mid 2000's. Probably 30 years. I don't know if the pan was new when she got it or not. That thing is black all over and has a very smooth surface inside and out. The cooking surface is more smoother than a teflon pan. The bottom outside rim has a great crust of carbon. I never knew if the original sand casting texture had been milled off when new, or if it had been filled in over the years with carbon scoring from having cooked thousands of meals. There is an "H" cast into the underside of the handle, and "8" on the top of the handle, and the bottom says, "107a INCH SKILLET" or similar.

I would continue to use this pan but I got my own new cast iron pan in about 1995 and use that several times a week.

I think it's just the picture making it look thicker. I don't know how old this one is, doesn't really matter to me but this pan/pot is a lot better made then any of the new ones I own. Just finding it in the desert was cool. There's a few really old mines out in this particular area. I was thinking one of the miners may have left it behind?

This was a old shaft I found last weekend in the same general area. There's much older mine works in the area than this spot. I'd date this shaft, going off the glass, tin and vehicle body parts I found to be sometime around the early to mid 1930's

I have a few newer cast iron pans that were given to me as a gift. They're nice but we rarely use them. Something about breaking out the older stuff that I like.

The other day I had it side by side with my other pans, the upper edge is actually thinner than the rest of my pans.

I was wondering about that deal across from the handle also? Was wondering if it was just for hanging it on a wall?

Yes It says Made in USA . Was hoping it was older but it'll be a nice addition to my camp kitchen box when I get it cleaned up and seasoned.

That's another handle to allow for two hand usage for when you pour off the grease with the pouring spout. It is cut out probably to allow air to cool it somewhat.

Made some breakfast this morning. Pinion Pie. Doctored up waffle batter loaded with Jimmy Dean pre cooked sausage, and cheddar cheese. Eggs cooked with jalapeño and onion.

Bought a couple of new Lodge cast iron loaf pans for making beer bread and banana bread. The loaves just fall out when done. Amazing crust around the edges. Will try to get pictures next time I bake a couple of loaves.
