How many man hours do you think it takes to change all 4 steering ball joints? For a mechanic that is....

I put it in for its MOT, turns out they all need replacing and its off the road until its fixed, I can't get it back so I have to pay them to do it really :( I had to buy new shocks too which I wasn't expecting.

I'm not too sure about a mechanic. But I just did mine last week and it took me 6 hours total for both sides and that included a 7 mile trip to napa

Dead easy with a ball joint tool (£50 ebay) and normal tools. Don't know how it can take 6 hour unless there was a lot or rust.... or beer involved! Took me an hour a side. Wheel off, caliper and hanger off together, disc off, back hub bolts off, ball joint nuts off, hub and shaft out together so no need to remove very tight hub/axle bolt, ball joints out with tool and new ones in. Then all back together. Anyone could do it!

rockauto has a special adapter for our ball joints wish i had found it when i went to do myn! would had saved me alot of time cutting pipes and scrap metal to get my old ones out and new in even with my really nice ball joint tool kit still didnt have the exact pieces i needed to get it done right.

all in all though if it went smoothly all four ball joints out and new in would had taken me 4 hours total.

I got my old ones out without a special cup, but going in was scarey without it. The ball joint wouldn't go in straight, so I had to back it off a few times. Once you have the proper receiving cup it should take a mechanic 4 hours.
I got F'd in the A on this one. They wouldnt let me have it back until it passed the MOT.

I got charged for 10 hours labour for replacing the ball joints and fitting a handbrake cable.

UNBELIEVABLE.

Did they at least kiss you on the neck when they got you form behind.?!?! How come you said you "can't get it back" did they hold it ransom? We didn't have MOT inspections here in Colorado just emission checks. I have been red tagged from our DOT when I was driving a dump truck, but I was given 15 days I think to fix the problem and show it was fixed at a weigh station.
Second time I did it, it took me 4-6hrs for both sides. First time was a long haul learning how to do it, that time probably took me 8hrs.

NVm.. did a search and found

OTC 7249 ball joint kit
OTC 7894 Jeep adapters

Also found an excellent how-to (tons of other excellent Jeep info as well):

Others have rented the tool from Autozone with the 4x4 adapters

Just out of interest, why did it take so long? There is only about 10 bolts per side to remove, inc wheel lugs. Rust and seized bolts?

B/c it's the UK and they're a bunch of tards...

I can see them not letting you drive it on the road, however for them to deprive you of your property and not let you tow it away and fix on your own sounds like theft to me.

I had a dealer try to do that to me once. There was a recall on the seatbelts to my Firebird. I called the dealer to setup an appointment and they told me I had to bring the car in for them to inspect, but once I did so I couldn't leave until they fixed the car.

I almost said "no problem" until they told me they didn't have the parts, wouldn't order the parts until they saw the car, and that it would take over a week to get the parts.

I asked if they were going to put me in a rental for that week and they told me "no". After a bit of persuasive negotiating they ordered the parts and called me when they were in...

Its a well known fact that 1/4 Americans are mentally disabled

I got mugged off to be honest. I could have got it back but I would have needed a flatbed for it to be legal.

Obviously a **** mechanic. They said it took them 11.5 hours (they charged me for 10) and all did was replace the ball jonts and fit a handbrake cable.
