Just as the title askes, anyone nearby with some offroad spots? I have one down the parkway under the overpass at the TN River!

Hopefully I can get my WJ to my place this weekend. Definitely need to get it dirty sometime soon. Haven't really driven it in like 10 months.
Oh really? Now what are you talking about when you say OCR?
Owens Cross Roads.

Yea it's a great little trail. We need to get all of us together one day for a trail ride up there. It'll only take about 2hrs probably.
I agree. It was a little muddy Wednesday, but not bad. Makes the rocks more interesting......... I didn't get a chance to explore the branch off to the right, near the beginning of the road. Does that lead to anywhere fun?

I think it just leads to that field. Trucks went mudding back there all the time and they blocked it off.
Anyone want to go do some "light-wheeling" today?
Thread has been kinda quiet.

What, do you people have lives outside of the interweb?

Going to be installing a new CB (old one got rained on last summer), changing the oil, and maybe fixing my small front-diff leak this weekend, in preperation for Hawk Pride. Anybody else have plans for this weekend, or next?

Yes, I welcome anyone to join me. I'm going to BIrmingham to meet up with some Kentucky fans for the SEC tournament. Plan is to watch the game at buffalo wild wings at noon sat, camp out at Oak Mountain, do some wheeling/fishing/mountain biking, then go back to the bar Sunday at noon.

Thats my life in a nut shell. Haven't found anyone to join me yet, so hit me up if your down!
Wheeling has been very limited lately. I started taking a buddy home so now I'm driving 250~ miles a week. Need to save gas when I can.

I'd be glad to get a couple JF buddies and go to the trail this weekend. I'll probably be at the MX on Saturday though.
Hopefully my battery will cooperate with me next weekend to take my Jeep out. I need to burn off all the 11 month old gas that's in it.

Dump a can of Seafoam in. Should help it out.
Whats up fellas, long time lurker first time posting. Here's my story.

So, I'm a yota guy. Always have been and always will be. I had a 2008 Tacoma all done up. It was my dream truck. Wheeled it a little bit and decided I didn't want to mess up my DD so I picked up a 73 cj5 rust bucket. If you guys have never had the opportunity to drive something like that, you are missing out. After wheeling the crap out of it for a while I decided it was time to sell it as I was about to graduate from school and didn't have the time and money to tow it around all the time (wasn't road legal).

So then I decided to stick with wheeling the truck. That is until a patch of ice got the best of me on 565 about two months ago. Needless to say the truck is gone now and insurance money wasn't enough to replace it so I decided to buy a 99 XJ and use some of the insurance money to really build it up. Still working out some of its kinks but its gonna be a great wheeling vehicle.

Looking forward to maybe wheeling with you guys and shooting the stuff about jeeps. and if you guys don't mind wheeling with toyotas, I've always got a group to go with (they are pretty good guys, they are alright with me being a jeep guy haha).

Oh, yeah, the names Paul.

I've seen a couple lifted XJ's around. Probably seen yours a time or two.

No lift on mine yet. Just bought it a little over a week ago. I'm now pondering the route I want to go with it.

I'll probably stick with 33's no matter what, but i'm debating on whether or not I want a 6.5" lift or 4.5". I'd probably be fine with the 4.5" because I don't have the time to wheel like I used to but the flex you get out of those 6.5" kits is

One benefit in going the 4.5" route is that it will leave me enough money to regear and lock it in the short future.

Welcome, Paul!

As far as lifting the XJ: I am in the low center-of-gravity group, so I say go with the least amount of lift you can get away with for the size of tire you plan to run, and still have good flex.
I am running 3.5" of lift on my JK, with 35's, and it is just about perfect for what I want to do with it.
I don't know much about XJ's and how much clearance they have, but I would think that 4.5" of lift would be more than enough for 33's. Again, this is just my opinion, with very limited knowledge of XJ's.
And, like you mentioned, going with the 4.5" lift would allow you to do a few other mods as well.

Fender clearance for big tires is an issue with the xj's. the jk's seem to have been made to throw big tires under. The suggested tire size for a 6.5" is 33x12.5. I could fit 33's with a 4.5" but I would have to tuck and trim the fenders, which isn't a big deal, but I don't want to have a ratty looking vehicle just to fit bigger tires. The biggest thing for me on the 4.5" lifts though is it seems you need to get the long arm kits to give you a good amount of articulation and they run about 1500 bucks. The one nice thing about my tacoma was that good quality stuff was pretty affordable. I put a 3" OME lift on it for about 400 bucks and could clear 33's no problem. To make my XJ clear 33's, I'm looking at about 2k to do it half way right.

I guess my old TJ and the new JK have me spoiled, as far as being able to fit bigger tires with minimal lift/body mods ............ $2k to fit 33's is pretty steep. But, ya gotta do what ya gotta do. :cheers2:

Do you guys know any reputable shops in the HSV/Madison area for regearing? Trying to get my costs figured out so I can make the best choice. I've heard of RCO, but everything I have heard hasn't been the best.
RCO is fine, has never done me wrong and usually done for less than quoted.

x2. Dealt with them a couple of times. Never a bad experience. The manager, Frankie, is a Jeep/Yota guy. He is good people.

I have found people on Craigslist with small shops who work on Jeeps as a hobby. I had a quote done by RCO for a lift kit, and thier labor was 6x the price I paid. Plus all they did was up-sell. The labor I paid with an average Joe was $100, and he let me help and showed me some tricks, so I got some good experience.

As far as the lift goes, I feel like a minimal lift is more fun, esp on an older Jeep.
Thanks for all the input fellas. I'll hopefully be pulling the trigger on my lift/tire combo here soon. I'll probably stick to the 4.5 size, most likely without long arms for now. Maybe I'll be one of the lucky ones and not have to get the SYE/CVDS combo. It's easy to convince yourself you'll be this epic rock crawler, but when it boils down to it, you really won't haha. I've been researching some lockers as well. I don't think i'm going to go the selectable route as its super expensive. I've read a lot of good things about the aussie lockers and think I may go that route.

Bama_WJ, not to stalk or anything, but I was reading the reviews of the aussie lockers and saw you posted a review. Are you still liking it so far?

edit: and sorry about the multitude of posts in such a short amount of time. I'm used to the alabama thread I started over at Tacomaworld.com. It's quite the chatty place.
