Ive done the clutch in my TJ before. I came down a hill in 4lo and 1st gear with the clutch pushed in. over spun the couch and it disintegrated. Had to get dragged out. Should have been in neutral with the trans.Ok here is a clutch trans question for y'all. The other night we killed the battery and tried to push start the jeep. When I popped the clutch a loud bang was heard and now it will not go into a gear. Engine on or off. Clutch in or out. Soooo I need to at least replace the clutch and maybe the trans (I think it's the trans). Here are my options.
I got a few clutch quotes at about 700-800 and if the trans is gone they will charge 1300-1700 more.
If I do it myself up at the auto center on post the clutch is 130 or so for the kit and a used trans for 500ish. I currently have the ax5 trans but advanced adapters has a kit I can install the ax15 behind the 4 banger. This will not only be stronger but allow options for the future.
For about half the cost at a shop I could upgrade. Anyone done the clutch and or trans on a tj? Anyone have a trans your tripping over?
Your thoughts?
Thanks...
It wasn't to bad to do. The ax15 swap you be better off finding a transferase with the 23 spline input. And you might want to go ahead and do a SYE while you have it out.
But just swapping in another ax5 isn't a bad option. It gets a bad wrap for being weak, but Ive put mine through enough abuse and its held up okay.
Id check with Complete Auto Recyclers for a transmission and possibly a transfercase pending on the rout you go. Probably a little pricey, but its at least an option.
