OK you say no clicks when turning key to start - be sure it is in P maybe shake shifter or try to start in N.

Several common possibilities:

Faulty or improperly adjusted neutral safety switch
Faulty ignition switch
Broken ignition switch activation pin
Loose, damaged, corroded, or otherwise compromised starter or battery wiring and wire connections
Faulty starter

Try putting the question in the XJ Technical Forum. This Forum is for the larger Jeeps, when a Cherokee was an SJ Cherokee.

I would start by checking the starter motor itself is getting voltage in Start and then work back from there.
