replacement lines

I have a 2007 grand Cherokee and i purchased the replacement lines and im wanting to do the work myself. The only problem is i dont want to have to replace from the trans cooler all the way back to the transmission. The lines i bought have an aluminum block that they thread into and my leak is only up front where the metal is crimped to the rubber and i was curious if i will have to replace all the way back to the transmission or if i can just replace up to the block? ???

Just a quick thanks. I am not a mechanic and this was probably the biggest job I've done solo. Normally I wouldn't post anything but I feel like the Bears just won the Superbowl!

Fixed a leak in one of the lines using the info from the thread. I used a mini tubing cutter ($6 from autozone) and 12" of 3/8 fuel line with clamps ($5 autozone). I guess my cuts were around #2 and #3 from the shortysmash's photo. There was a pinhole leak coming from the metal section which produced a lot of fluid, so I just cut that section out and replaced it with the fuel line. Easy and fast once I located the area leaking and purchased the parts.

pretty sure I saved well over $500 including the trans filter, fluid and gasket change (which I originally thought was the culprit).

Thanks again

Hey all, I've had a hose blow out and I believe it will fall into this thread. I've attached some pics below. I don't have a dremel, but I do have an angle grinder. Would that safely cut either above the crimping or remove the crimping itself?

I was unhooking my boat and parking the Jeep when I noticed a trail of "oil" in the dirt. I dropped down to look under and saw the first pic. I grabbed a 20oz cup to catch some of the fluid thinking I'd blown a radiator hose. But the next morning discovered it was a hydrocarbon, and most likely transmission fluid (later verified by the dealership). The other pics are the attachment point of the damaged hose and area.

I spoke to the dealership and they want $199 for the part replacement, plus labor (they told me about 1.5hrs), and I'll need to tow it in.

Well... it's been 2 years, and mine started leaking again. I just noticed some spots on the garage floor yesterday, and last night I tightened my hose clamps. Hopefully that fixes it. Otherwise I'll just replace the section of hose and some new clamps.

where can I find new fittings for the trans cooler? I have one that leaks. Could I use a compression fitting instead? I think the lines are 5/16. The male part I think is 3/8 and screws into the cooler. No one sells just the fitting they want me to buy the whole cooler.

Are you sure it the cooler connections leaking? Often the flex hose crimp fittings leak instead of the cooler connections. There are DIY fixes for that.

The trans cooler connection are not a standard compression or threaded fitting. Its a push-on type fitting which uses an o-ring for the seal. If it is leaking, the o-ring may be bad. I presume the dealer would have new o-rings or you might find something suitable at a parts store. The is a youtube video showing these fittings as part of an Jeep AC condenser replacement if you search there.

4 years here, no leakage, but I did double clamp both lines.

If you go to replace the tubing section, how much fluid do you lose one you unhook it? Is it a primed system?
It is not pressurized, but some will drip out. Less than a cup came out of mine once I cut the line.

Just make sure everything is tight before you crank the engine, otherwise it will pressurize and spray.

Two questions:

1. Has anyone tried any of the additives that are supposed to recondition the seals?

2. if you've replaced the rubber section with 3/8" fuel line, any thoughts on flaring the ends of the metal tube?

I finally found a Chrysler dealer to just sell me the m18x3/8x1.5 quick connector for my transmission cooler. I removed the cooler and ran a 3/8 trans hose in its place. Since the weather is cold it is fine. That will hold me until I pick up the connector.:)
