2.5" WJ Tweeter Replacement (write-up)

Well I finally got my replacement aftermarket tweeters from jeeptweeter.com

It was really easy to install.

1.) In order to start, I had to get to them. All you need is something to pry the panel up far enough to grab on.

2.) Now just work your way towards the center. You'll probably have to do the same on the drivers side and work that side to the center too to get the thing out. There's just a few clips holding it in.

3.) Once you get it off, you'll see your old crappy speaker(s).

4.) There's no room for a real screwdriver so you need to use either a socket wrench or a screwdriver like this in order to back out the two speaker screws.
Disconnect the speaker harness from the car (basically just squeeze the connector to release it and pull the speaker out).

6.) Here's the old speaker next to the new one. Notice how much nicer the new one looks?

7.) Now you need to remove the OLD speaker's harness to attach to the new one.

8.) Here's what you'll end up with.

9.) Strip the wires of your newly cut harness. Jeeptweeter includes a stripper, but it sucks, and doesn't cut very well. I used a regular old wire stripper.

10.) Now you need to attach the harness to the new speaker wires. Black always goes to black on these speakers, and green goes to whatever other color is there. In my case it was red. Twist the wires that go together really well. Now you can use the twist connectors or the crimping ends that the speakers come with. I chose to use the crimps since I consider it to be a better connection. I used my Leatherman Surge to crimp over my well twisted wires.

11.) Now to make double sure everything stays put, I wrapped the crimped section in electrical tape.

12.) Now just plug your connector back in, shove the wires under the speaker and reinstall. The directions that came with the speakers said to make sure the end where the wires connect to the speaker is facing the windshield. I don't know why, but better safe than sorry.

And that's it. These speakers sound awesome so far. The drivers side install is pretty much the same, just a little more frustrating since you've got a dash and steering wheel in the way.

Thanks for the write-up!

I was just able to tackle looking for a replacement set of speakers for the dash in my new WJ.

Do you lose much in frequency range with these new tweeters when compared to the factory speakers, or is it even noticeable?

I don't really know. If anything I think the new ones have a richer sound.

To me, they sound a lot better than the stock speakers.
Did your stock tweets go bad?

Mine crackle with higher volumes

Yup, that's why I had to replace them. They buzzed and crackled like crazy, even at normal volume.

These new ones I got have a lifetime warranty so hopefully I won't have to worry about having to buy new ones again, even if these go bad on me.
Sweet thanks for the link, they have lock and window motors too
You really need crossovers with tweeters, or they will blow up again.
Maybe I'm missing something here, but when I went to jeeptweeter.com, all I could find was Mopar speakers. What makes them different from the factory speakers?
So wheres the link to the speakers?

How wrong is it that dealerships still sell these tweeters. And on top of that, they aren't warrantied for even a minute because they are an electrical item. I bought a $50 Mopar tweeter when I first bought my Jeep and it crapped out within a couple weeks. Blasphemy.
Why not just cut the connector out of the whole thing? That's what I did on my door speakers and that worked out fine. One less connection to come loose that way.

Here's the aftermarket speakers from their site:

Their site tells you why the factory speakers burned out so often on the FAQ page. They also say that Jeep fixed this in their new speakers, and their aftermarket ones also fix this problem.

yeah, you could cut the wire completely out of the new one provided you can solder the old harness to the new one. I'm not worried though, those crimps are pretty tight.

EDIT: actually, you need to keep the new wires since there is an inline capacitor. I'm sure you'll lose the warranty if you were to cut the whole thing out.

Yeah the warranty is the best part of these speakers.

That may be true, I don't know, but the site offers a lifetime warranty (original buyer of the speakers). They say that they have very few returns which is why they offer this warranty. These speakers must last pretty well. Heck, the original ones lasted me 9 years. Here's the specs of the new speakers:

# Specially designed dispersion lens
# Included inline 7µF capacitor
provides 5700Hz high pass filter
# Tweeter can be safely crossed as
low as 2KHz (20µF)
# Power capacity 50W peak
# Nominal impedance: 4ohm
Pic 5 shows your inline filter. Realistically, it shouldn't need that crossover, because you (I assume) have the factory amp'd infinity setup. To my knowledge (unless there's that same style inline on the tweeter) there should be a crossover built into the factory amp. Just saying, don't worry about the possibility of blowing it using the factory setup.
Good writeup, a quick question.

I've heard mixed reviews on the sound quality of these, are they atleast on par with the factory tweeters, or are they better/worse?

Also, are they too loud, too quiet, or just right? Just a few curious questions, I'll likely be going the same route as you soon

Well I've lived with them for about a day so far. I find that they are a lot crisper sound. They're not too loud or anything.

I think that unless you're one of those audiophile people, you won't notice any negative differences from stock. and in my opinion, they're a little better.
The speakers that you got at http://www.jeeptweeter.com/CheckoutTwetersafterm.html are the same as the Delco tweeters shown in this attachment, but with the frame cut down some for a better fit. I tried them, and IMO they sound a lot worst than the factory speakers. The biggest difference is that the factory dash speakers are actually full range rather than tweeters. I had to install some 3.5" two-ways to get sound quality equal to or better than the stock speakers.

I guess it's all in who's listening to them. My stock speakers sucked, even though I have the higher end speaker system. Since I got these aftermarket ones, the sound is great. Everything sounds so much more clear and crisp to me.

No doubt there are better speakers out there, but I would personally choose these speakers over stock any day.
