2.0L Hurricane I4-T in a 1993 YJ

I have a 1993 YJ with a 2.5L AMC 150 I4 mated to an AX-5 five-speed manual transmission. I am assuming this because I’ve been trying to do a little research and found this article Jeep Wrangler Engine Options - VehicleHistory which noted that for Transmission Options: The 2.5L I4 was offered with two transmissions. Initially, the AX-5 and later the 30RH. The AX-5 was a five-speed manual, it was mated to the I4 for all model years. Given I have an I4, I assume I have an AX-5.

In the same article for the 2.0L Hurricane I4-T, it noted that for Transmission Options: Only the eight-speed Torqueflite 850RE automatic transmission is fitted to the Hurricane motor.

My questions are

1.) Will the 2.0L Hurricane I4-T mount on my 1993 YJ frame without any modifications? I’m assuming since they are both I4, that I won’t need to make any adjustments, but you know what they say when you assume. I’d like to do what is necessary before I have the frame blasted, primed and painted.

2.) Can I mate the 2.0L Hurricane I4-T engine to the AX-5 transmission? If so, any issues with doing that?

3.) Beyond the transmission, will there be any issues using the 2.0L Hurricane I4-T engine with my 1993 YJ axles (Dana 30 up front and a Dana 35 in the rear)?

I don’t need a 700 hp engine for what I want to do. Daily driver/cruiser and mild to medium off roading, nothing extreme. I’m looking to do a 4 inch lift with 33" Tires. My current engine was a real dog with 32”s and a 3 inch body lift. I think with the extra HP the Hurricane provides and the larger tires, things will kinda even out, but I want to know if I can use the existing transmission and axles or if I need to look at other options, whether it be engine or transmission/axles.

Thank you in advance.

The Hurricane engine is a fully electronically controlled engine and the same with the 8 speed auto trans. The cost to adapt it to a vehicle that is only has an ecu and possibly a TCM would be extremely expensive. Add that to the cost of getting a late model engine, trans, wiring harnesses, sensors and needed control modules . Not an easy or inexpensive swap.

First question is:
what gears are you running?

It's stock, so 4.10 with the 4cyl. / 5 speed

Hmmm ... In essence I am building from the frame up from scratch, so not really a swap. I know I can get a new one with wiring harnesses (like you said not cheap) ... but if not an easy fit into what I have maybe another path. I watched a youtube
of a guy who did what I am doing and he put in an 5.3 with an AX-15, but it looks like he had to cut off the engine mounts, use the AX-15 and a different rear end. I don't want to go that big so that is why I was thinking of staying with the 4 cylinder, hoping it will use existing mounts, but if the newer one is turbo charged would give me the power I am looking for. Any suggestions on an engine I can use with existing trans and axles that has a little more umph? Wondering if I can even add a supercharger or turbo on my existing 2.5L AMC 150 I4?
