1989 Steering Column Question

274 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Luuca
I just purchased an 89 Wrangler that had the steering column in pieces when I took ownership. I have located all the parts except for the key release lever spring. This is a super difficult part to find and I'm wondering if I can just remove the key release lever from the column all together?? If so, would I need to do anything to insure the ignition rack will still move when the key is turned?

I believe you can but ‘I think’ there’s another piece in there that is dependent on that lever to release the cylinder to the ‘lock’ position.

Collins Bros Jeeps or someone should have the parts…

I don't know if you have a break down of all the parts, but this is a great write up.

You could also pull another column from an S10 or probably any old GM car and yank parts as needed.

All those internal steering column parts are available for the $2 entry fee into pick-n-pull if your tool bag is deep enough to obscure the spring and other small parts. Any 90's Cherokee will have what you need.

Just sayin. . .
