Last summer I started tearing down my '84 CJ7 for a rebuild with frame repairs and a fiberglass body. I will use this thread to try to keep everyone up to date on the rebuild progress.

This will end up being a picture heavy thread!

This is the last known picture of my Jeep and I before I started tearing it down.


Hood, fenders and grille removed


Here they are sitting next to the Jeep.


After removing the body bolts, I lifted the Body off using the trusty Farmall H


Picked the body up and rolled the frame out from under it


Here is the body sitting on the ground


the body was so weak it started buckling when it was picked up!

Frame and drivetrain sitting on its own.


this is the condition of the rear ends of the frame rails



I cut all of the rot out.



Used the tractor again to pull the drivetrain out


I didn't take any pictures of taking the axles and stuff out, but here it is in bare frame rails about to get sandblasted


Blasted and primed


Most of the body mounts look like this, so I made new ones and welded them in


Here's one after replacement


I spent most of a day making this framerail pieces for the back


Got them welded in good and solid



Here is the frame all painted up after I completed the repairs


2 coats of primer, 2 coats of Rustoleum enamel paint, 2 coats of rubberized undercoating.

Axles back in


No pictures, but before I had to abandon it for the winter, I got the drivetrain back in and set the body on and put two bolts in it to hold it in place.

So that brings us to this year!

I decided to go with tube fenders because mine were rusted pretty badly.
Ordered from CCFabs, I love these so far, they look really beefy and were far cheaper than some "popular" brands.



My Factory inners were pretty rough, so I bought some 22 gauge steel and fabbed my own inner fenders


started sandblasting my grille and found the lower part where it mounts to the frame was pretty rough



So I cut it off and made this from some steel I had laying around


I made a makeshift paint booth in the barn to paint in and started throwing some primer on my steel parts

I don't consider myself in any way to be a "great" welder, but I'm not building a show piece, it just needs to hold up.

Over the winter my father and I bought a Lincoln ProMig 180 from Lowe's. that makes the job a lot easier than the old buzz box!

That's a good setup for what you are doing! I'm no pro welder either, but have really enjoyed making repairs with it; sure does give you one more piece of freedom from "the man"!!

I managed to get some work done last night, and even remembered to take a few pictures. a couple of them are a little dark.

I spent my night working on my anti-wrap bar, trying to finish designing and building that. It started raining, and I am working outside, so it didn't get done. As long as it doesn't rain tonight, I should be able to finish it.

On sunday I welded endcaps on my crossmember for the anti-wrap bar


I used this cheap Harbor freight tube notcher to notch the tubes for my anti-wrap bar. It's not quite center, so it needed a little tweaking.


Axle plates welded in


The bushing for the shackle on the front will attach to this point


This is a weld-in threaded fitting that came with the anti-wrap kit from Ballistic fab
A Heim joint will thread into this and use high-misalignment spacers to allow for articulation at the shackle end


Here is a picture of the top tube for the anti-wrap completed.


Hopefully more work gets done tonight with some more pictures tomorrow.

Forgive my ignorance on the subject - is your "antiwarp" bar the same as what some call a torsion bar? Just trying to figure out how to fix my SOA so it is right. Thanks!

I did a quick google search and I don't think it's quite the same, I have seen the term "ladder bar" used to refer to them as well.

Easy enough to do, and it Sure wouldnt hurt.
Overkill is just about enough.....

True, It definitely won't hurt and is far easier to do now than later.
I won't get a chance to do it tonight (Jeep Club meeting) but I will fit it up tomorrow and take some pictures

Friday night I laid down 3 coats of Ultra Silver Metallic in the makeshift paint booth. I'm really happy with the way it's turning out so far.
I have a couple of sags to sand out and a few bugs that landed on the paint before it hardened.
I am planning on sanding it down tonight and spraying one more coat tomorrow before it gets dark out, so I don't get any bugs in the paint.

Looking good. Hope to do paint someday myself. Is that BC/CC? or Single Stage and did you use self etching primer or epoxy?
Single Stage - etching primer on the steel parts, and Nason Acrylic Primer/surfacer on top of that. The Fiberglass just gut the primer/surfacer.

All paint and prep supplies come from my Local Carquest. Color is PPG Omni 4023 - meant to match my old car - Silver 2003 Chevy Cavalier
