Picked up this Jeep about 2 years ago locally from a craigslist ad for 1500 bucks. Frame was very bad at down sweeps above rear leafs, but I knew that when I bought it. It has a swapped 304 hooked to a 4 speed Tremac and Dana 300. It's been alot of work but hoping to have it ready by June. First day home and a good power washing. Also put the custom bumpers on that came with it.
Sprayed self etching primer on inside last night. Still got a little cleanup to do and waiting for seam sealer to get here. Then a little spot primer and gonna spray inside of tub, entire bottom, inside of fender wells, and probably all of engine bay with black raptor liner.
Also got all my steering components and pedals sanded, degreased, and primed. PO also cut out the radio hole with a axe or chisel and hammer so made a filler for that and got it primed and pretty close for paint. Prolly have to do a little spot filler to get it super smooth.
Did set the tub back down on frame today to make sure notch will be OK and everything is gonna work the way I thought. Still have to get tubing and remake most of roll cage and make different tie ins. Also want to weld bars across for 4 points to attach to.
I did order some 6" pocket style fender flares that looked real good on paper. Pulled them out of the box and they looked sweet! Held the front one on and started to look a bit big but prolly could have made work without cutting fender but not great. Then I held the rear one up to fender and they went straight back in the box and shipped back today. Lol. I guess I will just put stock style back on and call it a day.
And got most of my interior pieces painted and ready to go. Even saved my old superlift sticker on dash just because it's been on there for awhile and just seemed right to keep it. Lol
Sandwiched all plates of 3/16" steel also and bolted with grade 8. Actually it's 3 layers thick on top of wheel well so it can come out where it's hooked to the 6x6 plates. Gonna do a frame tie in the back pockets also. But i need to get some kind of bushings i think so its not steel to steel. And i would like to do a front hoop and tie into dash but will wait on that till the snow flies again.
Got to borrow a rear seat last week and surprisingly it fit to where smaller people fit back there still. Got 80% of my roll bar mocked up now. Made some perches that mount to the dash yesterday so sitting here now planning my attack on front bars. It's been a learning as I go with tube bending but so far haven't had to trash a big piece of pipe. Ordered a matching 36" baja suspension bench seat on Friday so hopefully it's here by the end of the week. Dog will be comfy back there! Lol
Got most of my mock up done today. Got a few plates to drill yet and need to shorten the 4 point bars up. And tickle a few of the copes then weld it all up!
Thanks man.... I have restored a quad years ago but this is my first truck project. And other than making a quad hitch or a bracket this is my first true fabrication with metal. I do have 25 years of carpentry and tile work under my belt so I'm pretty good with a grinder and fit and finish! Lol
I don't have much welding experience at all! But my Mom's boyfriend has been a welder for prolly 50 years. And a good friend is also a damn good welder. I fit everything up, grind smooth and clean and they come and do the welding! Especially structural stuff!!!
