'01 GC ATF change in Automatic

OK, going to change the ATF+4 for the first time on a '01 GC I6 with 80k. The auto tranny has some weaping around the back of the housing I am guessing from a minnor pan gasket leak. Whe I drop the pan, replace the pan gasket and the filter. How much ATF +4 do I have to replace? Is there anything else I should do while in there?

Depending on how long you let it drain, 6-8 quarts...
I always add 4, take it for a drive and verify the level prior to adding more. It's better than overfilling the tranny.
So is it closer to 4qts or 8???? I think the last 727 3 sp. in a Grand Wagoner I droped the pan changed the filter and fluid it took 4 qts? Is tehre magnets in teh pan on these also to replace?
Well there is about 12 quarts in there all togeather but not all of it will come out and there is no telling how much will come out. Could be 4,5,6,7, or 8. You can measure how much came out or fill it slowly.... go for a drive and see if you need more.
After draining my re42 overnight, it took 4 qts. I would be buy 5 to be safe. Of course you can measure how much comes out and use that as a guide.
Start with four, but plan on adding a total of 6.

I've never seen anyone add 8.

When I chaged the fluid in my 45RFE 6 came out...
i bought 6 quarts and only used 4.5 quarts. and that was letting it drain over night too.

on an aside if nobody minds, my wifes car had the radiator replaced cause the front end got smashed up. a shop did the work. we made a long trip with it and near the end of the trip, the thing would move. at stop lights i thought i was going to have to flinstone myself the rest of the way. i finally made it back to the shop, after putting 2 quarts of atf in it.

they told me they had to put 11 quarts of ATF in it! im suprised we made it back. Turns out that whoever worked on the car Cross threaded the cooling line that sends the atf to be cooled and all of it leaked out!
The torque converter holds a ton of fluid, and unless you line it up with the drain hole and remove the plug it won't drain, thus, you'll only end up having to refill it with like 4-6 quarts.
If you dont mind a bit of Hi Jack
I think it was answered above

There are drain hloles on the converter? I am looking at converting to Synthetic and want a complete change.

What is the build date on your Jeep. It prolly came filled with AFT+4 which is syn. Only early 99's had ATF+3 in them.
Build Date is 10 or 11 of '98. Dealer said it has been changed before, I guess I could research more what they put in when they changed.

Not sure about a 2001 GC but the filter in my tranny is held in with three Torx bolts. Can't remember what size T25 maybe?
Thanks for the filter held in with Torq info the '01 does have ATF +4 required in owners manual. I have Torq drivers for the filter.

It could have come with AFT+3 then... My build date was May 99 (late) and it had +4.
noob question

So, i believe i have ATF+3 in my tranny right now, but can i put ATF+4 in there? What is the difference? Also, what is the filter i am replacing? I know i need about 6 quarts of tranny fluid. How much will the fluid and filter end up costing? thanks a lot!

go ahead and put ATF+4 in it, 4 is an upgrade, better fluid than 3. You can mix 4 into 3, but never the reverse.

this what your filter should look like

good luck!

I have a 01 grand and its atf 4. Also took a little over 6 to refil it. But it was already low from the leak before I got to it.
