Thanks for the feedback! Ill probably just go that route rather than buying another used rusty one. And I actually have a couple cans of eastwoods internal frame coating I could shoot it with.

Any recommendation as to where to buy it? So far the cheapest I found a new one was $125 shipped on ebay. And since the insurance company will be installing the new windshield, the only gasket I should have to get is for the cowl right?
$125 sounds pretty good, I got this last one off craigslist (aftermarket new in-box, just never used) for like $75 I think. You cant see it in the photo but I did have to bring the old one with me and the guy re-used the rubber seal, and had to take the old glass as deposition; strange but that's how he wanted it. Yeah, good idea to replace the cowl seal also!!

good time to swap to rivet nuts for the soft-top header if you run one also:
(switches the self tappers to machine threaded screws)

I don't usually run soft tops but I do switch to my half hardtop when it gets warm out. I was actually looking into doing that on my current one because every year I was having to put larger screws in and a couple of them are just blown out now.

I am about remove the hard top and put the soft top back on. The top of my window frame has seen better days and I am going to weld up all the screw holes that over the years have become bigger and bigger. Has anyone used the kit from Quadratec http://www.quadratec.com/products/13022_100.htm ? Seems like it would work, but I was curious if anyone has made a home brewed one. I looked for nutserts, but no one knows what I am talking about. Anyway, I was thinking of welding in a nut and just doing it that way. I have to weld up the holes and the nut would take up most of the space too. Any thoughts?

The kit looks like the way to go to me! The price doesn't seem too bad for a permanent fix and you'll never have to mess with that problem ever again.

      Anyone bought this?

Kit is supposed to replace holes in windshield frame with threaded rivets. The kit is $50!

I'm sure its worth it but anyone know where i can find threded rivets and the tool elseware? I'd like to replace lots more than just the soft top rail screws. Like the ones around the shifter plate which are all stripped out.

      Thoughts?

I've been eyeing a strapless bkini ever since I got the Jeep since it came with an old tattered one with straps. I think the strapless ones look much cleaner, and hopefuly a new black one won't show mud stains as bad as that spice colored one has. I was just wondering if any of you who use one could post some pics of it on your YJ.

If you don't know exactly what I'm talking about here's a link. Bestop 52509-01 - Bestop Strapless Bikini Tops for 87-91 Jeep® Wrangler YJ - Quadratec

My second question is about those windshield channel and hard top channel reinforcing kits. I know I'm not the only one who is tired of stripping out the screw holes  The kits they advertise are supposed to replace the screws with either threaded bolts or rivets of some sort.

      Here are the links:
-Windshield channel kit Rnventions JO141 - Soft Top Reinforcing Kit for 76-95 Jeep CJ-5, CJ-7, CJ-8 Scrambler & Wrangler YJ - Quadratec
-Hard top kit Rnventions JO100 - Hard Top Reinforcement Kit for 87-95 Jeep Wrangler YJ - Quadratec

      Anybody ever try these out?

      Do they work?

I don't and I am too lazy to go pull the bracket off the Jeep, but a quick google found this article. This is exactly what I did to mine (just add them where the hard top bolts on.) I re-use the same SS bolts and washers to put the hard top back on. Oh, and I used some metric washers that fit much tighter than the ones made for the the same bolts.
Jeep Articles / Technical and Installation (RNventions Soft Top Reinforcing Kit) - MoabJeeper Magazine

PS, when I put the hard top on, I run a strip of electrical tape over all the holes. This seems to work well to seal the holes and pulls right off in the spring.
Q-tech sells a kit, but I think they are really high on it... Rnventions JO141 - Soft Top Reinforcing Kit for 76-95 Jeep® CJ-5, CJ-7, CJ-8 Scrambler & Wrangler YJ - Quadratec

Harbor freight stuff: $16.99 for the tool and some inserts, $4.99 for 100 refill package... I will let the photos speak for themselves, but the tools sure look the same. There is very little pressure used, you are more likely to strip out the threads than break the tool. I would, however, add some lock-tight to the OUTSIDE if the insert when you install them. A slight cross thread can tend to spin the insert and then you have trouble getting the screw back out. Some lock tight will help hold it in the drilled hole when you squeeze the insert with the tool.

Anyway, for $20.00 it's head over heels the best bang for the buck I ever spent on my Jeep!

I had this problem with my windshield chanel when I purchased my YJ. Quadratec sells a "reinforcement kit"
      Rnventions JO141 - Soft Top Reinforcing Kit for 76-95 Jeep® CJ-5, CJ-7, CJ-8 Scrambler & Wrangler YJ - Quadratec
that lets you use machine screws to hold down the chanel. Although I didn't purchase the kit (I just borrowed the instalation tool from work, and bought some inserts), I did basically the same thing, and it has been holding fine for around 4 years now, even with the two piece chanel. I just use a washer with the screw in the center, to spread the load out a little more.

This is the way that I was planning on as well, but I have been doing some investigating in the Fastenall catalog (a behemoth of a book of fasteners) and I found the same parts to perform the conversion.

I have noticed that whenever a situation comes up that is related to Bestop products, I see Geoff right there trying to get a solution or an answer.

On a related note, the steel is much heavier on my '65 CJ5, but it still has a tendency to strip out holes when the tops were removed and reinstalled every season. It's just the nature of sheet metal screws and sheet metal, they weren't designed to be removed and reinstalled on a seasonal basis. If anything, Willis, Kaiser, AMC, and Chrysler are to blame for not revising the way that the channels are installed.
