So far I've spent the past 2 days debating a new tire carrier. (And plotting what I'll need to do the transfer case and diffs tonight. RTV scares me but that's just cuz I haven't messed with it before :) ..)

Gotta do something about that spare soon. (I'm trying to avoid having to grind down the bottom rubber support/mount, since at the end of the day the tire is almost certainly too heavy for the stock carrier anyway. And the wif is dead set against a separately-swinging carrier.)

      Any suggestions?

(Edit: if anyone else is looking for that carrier, Amazon has it for $306.99 delivered. $55 cheaper than Quad..)

Just to give a little more info from my file 'o tire carriers...

The Bestop is one of the cheapest ways to solve the problem...

      http://www.quadratec.com/products/12203_01_07.htm

Reasonably priced, but does nothing other than carry the tire.

The Or-fab is over $500, but carries a couple Jerry cans also...

Both of those mount to the tub.

If you have an aftermarket bumper and just want to add a swing-away, Olympic makes one that might work...

      http://www.quadratec.com/products/22202_22_07.htm

In theory, that can bolt onto non-olympic bumpers. But olympic also makes reasonably priced tow-rated rear bumpers, if you were interested in that. (Most reciever bumpers haven't gone through the tests to be 'tow rated'. They're probably perfectly safe to tow with, but...)

There's also the LOD carrier, which is pretty nicely priced, with the base unit just a little over $400...

      http://www.4x4xplor.com/lod/proddetail.php?prod=LoD-XTREME

They've got some nice 'higher end' stuff, too.

The cheapest I've found for a 'full blown' tire carrier, with J-cans, etc, is the Grant's...

      http://grant4x4.com/s_13.asp?pro=17&c=&pn=Tire+Carrier+%2F+Jerry+Can+Bumper

Anyway, there are TONS of options out there sub-$500, these are just a few. Your tailgate is worth a hell of a lot more than $500. If you don't want to spend the money, take it off, and throw it in the back seat.

if your looking for something in that price range, Q-tec has a carrier by bestop i think, that mounts to the body above and below the passenger side brake light assembly, it also mounts thru the body onto the roll bar for more support....i've been thinking about getting it

      found the link

You definitely want to go with the Bestop tire carrier.. mine was 260 shipped and it's actually tied into the factory gate so you don't have to open two things to get at your storage. It's plenty strong.... I have a 33x12.50 and have tested it by:

      • dropping off a ledge and supporting the majority of the weight of the jeep on it briefly.
      • Standing on it and jumping... I weigh about 220lbs

No problems thus far.... and it looks way better than most of the rear tire/bumper combos (and WAY better than all the cheap ones).

I am stuck between 2 different tire carriers... I can't decide between the Bestop tire carrier: http://www.quadratec.com/products/12203_01_07.htm
or the OR-Fab tire carrier: http://www.orfab.com/tirecarrier.htm

These both seem to be good options for me. I already have a bumper that I like, and I don't want to get a different one.

I'm slightly leaning towards the OR-Fab because I know they usually build some high quality equipment and I can store my gas cans in the rear when I pull my seadoo out to the lake this summer.

      Any opinions are appreciated. Thanks.

That sort of seems like a lot of work for not much gain. If you left a hitch carrier type rack on all the time your departure angle would be lousy.

What about one of these for the 35" spare:
      http://www.quadratec.com/products/12203_01_07.htm

and this for the hunting gear:
      http://www.etrailer.com/pc-CC2~V90590.htm

I have a cheap-o cargo carrier purchased on clearance at WM. One of the best Jeep accessories I have ever purchased. It has carried everything from firewood to Christmas trees and everything in between. When not in use, it just hangs on the wall in the garage.

x2. I just installed the tire carrier and am getting ready to get the rack for a upcomming trip.

My final tire upgrade will be for BFG A/T KOs in 32x11.5x15 on my stock 8x15 Ravine wheels.

Weight of the tire is at 47lbs plus the weight of a typical 8x15 alloy wheel (18lbs?) for estimated total weight of 65lbs.

Would the stock tailgate be able to handle the weight of this 32" wheel/tire combo if I put in an aftermarket tire carrier like this from Olympic?

      http://www.quadratec.com/products/12008_910X_PG.htm

Or would a light- to medium-duty HighRock (Bestop?) tire carrier be good enough without bending/cracking the tub like I've seen in some threads (which may be caused by heavier 33 or bigger tires & wheels)? I do have diamond plate corner armors in the rear for additional tub support.

      http://www.quadratec.com/products/12203_01_07.htm

I don't want to spend too much on a new rear bumper with integrated swing-out tire carrier as I don't see any plans to go higher than 32" tires.

      Thanks!
