The shape is slightly different - note the curves along the side.

Here is what you need (shape-wise)

This is what you are looking at

      That being said, I found this 1964-88 AMC/Jeep 199-232-258 Straight/Inline 6 Cylinder Steel Valve Cover - Chrome
      Product Description:
AMC/Jeep 6 cylinder chrome steel valve cover fits 1964-1988 AMC and Jeep 199-232-258 straight/inline 6 cylinder engines. Short OEM style and baffled. Will not work as replacement for plastic model valve cover. Height: 3-1/2".

Will not work as replacement for plastic model valve cover. Huh?

I've never really paid attention to the difference. Maybe the way they attach/mount to the head?

Sometimes something that "fits" will also need a hole drilled or a tab removed.

on my 83 cj7 i have the 258ci inline six (stock with plastic valve cover) and i cant get the valve cover to seal, i know i can buy a steel or aluminum one for it, and i know i may or will have to drill and tap holes... bummer, but i found a really cheap one on amazon (here is the link Amazon.com: 1964-88 AMC/Jeep 199-232-258 Straight/Inline 6 Cylinder Steel Valve Cover - Chrome: Automotive ) but i have never heard of "c.f.r. preformance". so all i really would like to know is; is this company any good? also is there any better idea for me?

I had a similar problem. Leaking valve cover. When I pulled it off it looked like the PO had tried to fix the leak by overtightening the valve-cover bolts to the point that it bent and warped the cover, making it leak much worse.

They still make the older style, here for example:
      http://www.amazon.com/1964-80-199-232-258-Straight-Inline-Cylinder/dp/B003A6U560
      http://www.amazon.com/Stock-Replacement-Valve-1964-80-Chrome/dp/B004HH62CC

But I took a different approach- I laid the valve cover on a block of wood, then using a wood dowel from above, beat the valve cover straight. Took a while, and if I knew they were only $20 new (above), I'd probobly just bought a new one.

HP, if I knew or could confirm that the chrome covers would fit perfectly with no drilling/tapping/etc, I'd probably buy one. At this point I'm not too sure, I've searched this and other forums but so far haven't seen such info yet.

Once I have the orig cover off in a few days, I plan to check the fit carefully. One suggestion by co-worker here was to put an omni directional flashlight under it on a good flat surface, while in a dark room. Should be able to easily see problem areas.

      Examples:

Note above reviewer said orig oil cap won't fit.

Clifford used to make one I guess. You'd have to search ebay/CL to find one, and they are a pretty penny. I also thought I heard someone finding a chrome steel cover that would fit, but never saw if it worked out or not. http://www.amazon.com/1964-80-199-232-258-Straight-Inline-Cylinder/dp/B003A6U560

Something with the head and/or rocker bridges, or ribbed cover design being changed in '81; or not having front and rear holes or something... I have an '83, so I am not entirely sure.
