2” lift with 35s doesn’t seem like a good option. Why not set the rig up with appropriate suspension instead of cutting the body? You can upgrade the suspension and still stay within budget.

Do yourself a favor and correct this issue permanently by installing a Novak or Savvy cable shifter. Inexpensive and easy install.

D44 was an option in the Sahara so you’ll have to verify the axle in person. Ax15 is a solid transmission. Have 172,000 miles on the AX15 in my YJ. As you mentioned, check for rust
