Your spring U bolts have a lot of excess length sticking down waiting for a rock or other obstruction to hit and break them off. I would cut them off about 3/8" from the nut.

You're correct. I've read complaints about hubs unocking also. The axles themselves are tremendously strong. Being made of 4340 chromemoly steel, they can really take a lot of torque.
