I've read about people leaving it gravity bleed for hours or all day. Just periodically top it off. It was a last resort that did the trick.

Hmmm... My understanding is that the straps stay on and then snap when the clutch is first depressed. If they haven't, you may have not completely bled the system. This may be the original problem.
