Yep, as the title says, I've got a weird, loud noise coming from (I think) somewhere in the dash of my YJ. HELP! I've ruled out the instrument cluster, as it's actually removed in this video. It's...

Heater core replacement: clarification please?

Hey guys, I'm 99% sure my heater core is leaking (smells like donuts, windows are fogged/wet, difficult to impossible to clear up). I've read some write-ups, but without really knowing this job, I'm...

That's probably what I'll end up doing.

Also, looks like there wasn't a gasket (or anything) between the transmission and the transfer case. Just a weep hole to leak a little transmission fluid...

Quadratec didn't have it. After more searching, I ended up ordering one off of eBay. Looks identical, same part number etched on it, for a 242, etc.

As for the rebuild kit, did you have to use a...

I opened up that JY 242, and the shift mode fork was damaged. At some point, the pads broke into tiny pieces and the fork ended up going metal on metal and grinding itself down some. The gear it...

Update: ended up getting a 242 from a 1995 ZJ, however it looks Like the build date on this is 1999. I ended up ordering this from a JY, and they assured me this was out of a 1995, etc. etc., but...

Awesome. Super appreciate the feedback.

I found a September 1994 242 t-case out of a ZJ. I'm thinking it might be totally fine even if it has the early gear cut, since it's self-contained? The...

I just thought of one more thing. Do I need to be mindful of anything to do with gear ratios if I do the front case swap?

Ok, so that's what a front case swap is. I'm not locked into easy, I'm locked into what's best for my situation, even if it's a bit more difficult. I like the idea of more options from the JY, even...

Is there a way of matching gear cuts by using components out of the current 249J that I have, swapping those parts over to an older (say, '89) 242? Or do I really need to match those gears.

So really it's about getting the same gear cut, then making sure I keep the internal slip yoke config I already have so I don't need a different (or modified) driveshaft? If, for example, I went...

249 > 242 Transfer case swap: Suffering from information overload

Hey guys, I have a 1995 5.2L ZJ project vehicle and it's got a messed up transfer case. Suspect it's the viscous coupler. At any rate, I'm looking at swapping in the 242. Why the 242? Well, so...

I was thinking the very same thing, the junkyard viscous coupler could be just as bad in a JY version as the one I have now. Plus, I kinda like the idea of the conversion to the 242 or 231.

But,...

Weird driveline issues, weird clunking from front driveshaft?

I need to bounce some ideas of the real experts here. I recently bought a 1995 ZJ (5.2L V8, stock lift, NP249 transfer case) with a busted front drive shaft as a project vehicle. The CV joint up...
