AMC's V8s 304,360 and 401 will bolt up, but will need some additional parts. As said above easiest would be another I6.

Have tried to adjust the clutch? The trans needs to be completely stopped internally to shift into reverse. So an adjustment maybe needed. Reverse isn't synchronized.

Best option, HEI is one wire, switched 12vdc, two you have a Tac. Those old ign modules are sketchy at best. Just make sure you have the correct distro gear, don't want to chew up the cam.
