It's a mixture of both. There is such a thing as a generic Jeep wave, for any year Jeep. I tend to wave at Wranglers (and CJs of course) of any year, and Cherokees etc if they appear to be offroaded....

Don't forget to also check for voltage drop to the body. That would happen in my YJ, quick fix was to run an extra ground strap from the neg terminal to the body.
