That HP30 might not have a crush collar, mine had shims. Other than that I agree with everything you said.

Use a new pinion nut. They are cheap and are not designed to be reused.

It is not a matter of should. Your gear ratios have to match front and rear or you will definitely damage your drive line by putting it in four wheel drive.
