Early Bronco had 28 spline axles shafts but can be upgraded. A friend broke an early Bronco shaft when he tried to drive away with the parking brake engaged. But that is not a typical occurence.

I'm sure you checked your oil level? Make sure all bolts are tight, trans to bell housing, T/C to trans, etc. No body screws touching trans? Sometimes it will amplify gear noise through the body.
