Sounds like the shop was trying to rip you off. Any reputable shop would have actually done some trouble shooting, and not immediately told you to replace the transmission.

Mine are 3.75 at 4.5 inches of lift. 4.5 bs should work for what you're wanting to do, but I've never done it. I only ran 235's at stock height.
