Overextend would happen if say you put a shock that will support a 0-2inch lift on a 3inch lifted vehicle.

Odd the forks broke, but that can happen. That is the reason they make/sell fork...

Almost seems like your overextending them to cause them to rip down...

Just wire brush and use some rust converter/paint on anything you remove to work on and a degunk/rinse once in a while.
