Question Creak and Clunk from driver's side suspension

I just replaced my ball joints in the hopes of fixing the creaking and clunking from the driver's front suspension. Didn't help, despite everybody else I asked saying that was the problem.

Finally got it back in! I had to rotate the driver's side a bit and fiddle around and it finally popped in.

It just won't go in. Made sure all the splines were clean, greased it, tried and tried. Something is stopping it. If I pull the diff cover off, will I be able to see anything?

Question Can't get axle back in...

I just finished replacing the ball joints and can't get the right-front axle back in. The driver's side went in just fine and that side is back together. But the passenger side one is about 1/2"...

A friend thinks his transmission is going out because it rarely ever uses 4th gear; it's either 3rd or 5th. Conversely, in my WJ, it uses 4th as much as 3rd or 5th.
