I recall that Torx is usually a better bolt for less stripping during manufacturing (still prefer Robertson personally)

Check the retaining clip, the post from the brake pedal either isn't sitting right or possibly it broke. You can get aftermarket ones through Dorman or the dealer if the latter case

I would suspect that the ring gear is identical in the one the OP pulled, he should be able to swap them over. Mostly you find the change in gear cut in earlier (like 80-95ish). If it doesn't work...
