socket can't be too big as it goes inside the hub flange and the wheel goes on the outside of the flange as its a hub centric wheel mounting,
its just a lot easier and safer with it still attached...

I loosened mine by taking wheel off, remove split pin, put wheel back on and lower to ground, half inch breaker bar + pipe and 36mm 6 side socket, helper stands on the brakes while I stood on the end...

they are not supposed to touch the tone ring, the cam sensor sometimes gets a shim to get the correct clearance, which you have to be careful not to miss when changing them, so maybe the crank sensor...

they are ground wires which are spliced into the same ring connector on the block. with it looking damaged, I would repair the wire first and see if it clears the fault code.
