If you tow anything big with a CJ, might I suggest getting a half cab and running gooseneck on a non-rusty frame so you don't Wag the dog with the tail?

Sounds like a fork overshot and possibly off the end of the rail or something is binding it. Perhaps someone lost the check ball and just stuck another in or it shifted both low range and 2 full time...

I have pulled mine 3 times without replacing the mid-tube oring. A little dielectric grease or sil-glyde helps with reassembly.

With electronic ignition, the condenser is only to kill radio noise. If it's hooked up, they can short out internally on rare occasion and kill spark.

See if you can find a helper to turn the key....

The water is trapped because the vent drain on the bottom is clogged or was sealed by a PO. Water gets in there from seals on the side windows leaking, rear door/window leaking water into the deck...

Actually, most will TRY to run at full throttle. A TPS not giving signal will stop it from starting. (unplug your current one and see if it acts the same or doesn't start at all.
