okay so i have a extremely loud whine coming from the engine, the whine is always there as long as the engine is on. when the RPMs rise the whine gets extremely louder. i do have my power steering gear box seal leaking, could this be the cause of the whine like air in the lines? because the sound is coming from some where around the power steering pump. does a bad steering pump whine like that?
You could try bleeding it, but it may have done permanent damage by now. I'd bleed it really well, check the fluid, and if it's still there, plan to replace it. It's not a hard job... I just did it this weekend, actually.
yeah fluid levels are fine, i have the lucas oil power steering stop leak in it right now. not doin a whole lot of good. but i was plannin on changin the power steering pump and gear box soon anyways.
You need to bleed the power steering system. If you're leaking, then you will have air in your system. It's just matter of how much air. If you're hearing a loud whine from the pump, it either has a lot of air running through it, or its damaged....from lots of air running through it.
Jack the front end of the Jeep up to make it easier to turn the wheels. Turn them all the way to the left, then all the way to the right, but don't hit the steering stops. Do this for several minutes, or until you don't see any more bubbles coming out of the power steering pump reservoir. Then, start the engine and let it idle while you continue to turn the wheel all the way left and all the way right (again, don't let it hit the steering stops). Keep doing this for, literally, 30 or 40 times. After that, it should be sufficiently bled.
yeah last night i did exactly that. but sadly it did nothing to help the noise go away. i would just about say the pump has gone bad...hopefully im wrong.
Since you let it get so low to where it is whining I would have to say yes you probably burned up the vanes. But try to bleed it and give it a whirl...it's only gonna cost ya a little fluid.
the power steering fluid level never gets low even when i tried bleeding the system it just kept rising up in the reservoir. it never really went down to much.
It shouldn't drop unless you have a leak somewhere. If the whine is still there after you bled the system, it's probably time to replace the pump.
Just a word of advice: Go ahead and get the more expensive pump that comes with a new reservoir. They sell the pump itself (w/o reservoir), but you're sure to have leaks if you go that route.
Hey guys, i'm having the same issue. but my fluid level has never been to the low mark, and no leaks?? is it normally the actual pump that whines or is it the pulley? I dont know why this thing has just started whining but its getting worse...
yeah it just looks like a couple bolts & the pressure/return lines... would it be a good idea to change the lines as well? is there some type of filter i should look at?
It's not a bad idea to change the lines while you're at it, but I didn't do that when I replaced mine and it's been fine. There's no filter to mess with. I would recommend you get a new pump that includes the reservoir, instead of getting just the pump by itself.
arright cool. thanks alot... thats just another $100 ive gotta spend on the thing. after everythings back together, just do that bleed thing by turning the wheels back and forth for a while?
Yeah, more or less. Jack it up to get the wheels off the floor, then turn it all the way left and all the way right (but not hitting the steering stops) until bubbles stop coming out of the PS reservoir. Then start the engine and continue turning it left and right, as before. After about 30 or 40 turns you should be ok. Watch the pump for leaks for the next several weeks.
