Deacon You're running 35" tires on a stock D35? That's not advisable in the first place. Putting more torque to it is a very bad idea. There are several common options out there, but essentially you'd have to replace that rear axle with something else that's bigger and stronger. How many options you have depends primarily on your budget. But if you're talking about a custom hemi and tranny swap, then I'm going budget is not a major factor

Call Jeep Speed Shop. They did a swap with an NV3550.

I don't know about NV4500, but they should be able to help you.

FWIW, you have a front D30 not 35. And your D35 in the rear is shaking in its boots at the thought of a Hemi pushing power through it. It's barely adequate for the 35" tires much less 300+HP. Just sayin. ;-)

97 TJ 6.1l Hemi swap with an NV4500?

Hey guys- think I found the thread where I can get this answered!

I have been contemplating doing a 6.1l hemi swap to my 1997 Jeep TJ and want to know if the NV4500 Dodge 5spd Manual Trans will bolt right up to the modern 6.1l hemi out of an SRT8 Grand Cherokee. I want to keep a manual trans in my Jeep for obvious reasons and need to replace mine regardless. If it doesn't bolt up to it, is there an adapter kit I can use? Any other recommendations for a manual trans to use with this swap?

My current set-up:

1997 Jeep TJ SPORT
4.0l
5speed manual
4inch rough country suspension lift
2inch body lift
Dana 35's front and rear with 4.10 gears
35inch Mickey T's
Hole in muffler

Superjay5 Oh man! I just noticed you are in Michigan. I'm up in Traverse City.
Now my gears are turning. Would love to drop a V8 in my rig! I have a 6.0 in my Escalade, I am constantly dreaming on what it would be like to have that kind of power in the TJ!

When you have a minute could you PM be some rough pricing on a swap. I do have the NV3550. I know there are alot of variables, but if I could get an idea I could start budgeting. Thanks!

theGiantPanda Yes Yes Im still here LOL... Oh yeah still doing swaps. done quite a few actually. I moved from a 4000sf shop to an 8000' shop april/may. I was awarded the LINEX franchise for the Detroit Metro area. The LINEX thing has been a process and quite involved.

I have a TJ in the shop right now from North Carolina that is getting a 2012 VVT 545rfe combo, with AC of course.... We did [2] gen 3 hemi/manual swaps this spring before the move- jeeps from Florida and Illinios. I finished off one of my in house builds on a 03 rubi with a gen3 hemi and 5 speed set up, just sold it a few weeks ago. I have updated the fuel system kit and now have it down to a replacement pump assembly, 4 fittings and of course the increased 3/8 supply line. I have the transmission crossmember kit redesigned to be even more versitile and adaptable then version 1... and even more direct than before. Its pretty sweet.

we are doing our first JK hemi swap right now- kicker is- I designed our own conversion frame mounts, trans mount and single battery tray assembly. I have the hemi in between the frame rails and am excited about this. My kit eliminates the need to spend money on additional parts that 'other' kits require you to get.

anyways.... my buddy keeps giving me ***** about the panda LOL... I really want to get her all done. One of the guys I have working for me now is fresh out of TIG school.... sooooo i am hoping to get her up on the hoist one day and build the exhaust system. i am afraid that i will have to move the drivers side upper link to the passenger side. Not sure i can realistically have the exhaust , link and driveshaft be friends in that confined space LOL!

theGiantPanda yep shes sitting in the middle of the new shop. LOL... mechanically it needs driveshafts, exhaust and bleed the brakes..... LOL but shes mine so everything else that is a customers project or one of the 'for sale/flip builds' comes first. sucks being the boss sometimes LOL

jeepinjoeu Just finished reading through the entire thread. Awesome build! Now you have me wanting to build a sleeper tj with a supercharged 6.4.

Any updates on your rubicon? I see its been a couple years.

theGiantPanda got the front brake lines finally ran.













decided to put the cut off switch back into the rubi. I originally was going to have the on off handle inside but didn't like any of my options so I went with a hidden option.. with the lever tucked up in the back drivers side rear fender pocket. after getting it all fit and function, I cut the control rod down to about 5" and retapped the end for the handle to go back on.










drilled the replacement panel for the pass side battery tray and then took a minute to see what worked best for a mounting position for the stock fuse box. I needed to reposition it as the oil lines to the reservoirs need the same space the the stock box occupied in its 'stock location.' separated the box bracket from the fender bracket. bent a piece of 1.25" flat stock, found the right spot and I think I have a winner. I am looking to mount the warn winch control box down on the new battery plate soon.

theGiantPanda So yesterday I gotta wild hair up my Tail and went to finishing plumbing the brakes to and in the front axle. Figured out where to put my tabs for the caliper lines and also a mount for the T block flex line that will couple to the upper link fitting. Got the tabs on and then went to attach the brake line.... Sob I have 2 sets of banjo bolts and neither is right! And then of course the line to the caliper is wrong size banjo opening as well! Awesome. I did find the right set on eBay and ordered them up. Maybe functioning brakes by the weekend!

theGiantPanda No no.... just got busy with customers projects. We are actually going to try and have this rig up and ready to go on a trip in October.
